Decorating Theme: Woodland Owls

Monday, November 3rd, 2014
Hoot, hoot! On the prowl for owls? If you take a look around at any home decorating store, you are bound to see owls perched on just about everything. Whether you are looking to decorate a child’s room with an avian theme, or you are in need of a touch of modern decor in your living room, owls are a perfect woodland inspired touch.
Start Small

When beginning to select owl themed pieces for your home, it helps to pick an item that will be small enough to add a touch of woodland charm while blending in with your current decor. If you love the feel that the owl brings to your rooms, continue to add more owl themed pieces until you have a complete look pulled together. To start a room off right, we recommend adding small accents to begin the theme in your chosen area. Ornaments, decorative displays and even kitchen textiles are perfect options to grace your holiday tree, kitchen or dining area all year long.

Light Up the Night

Owls are primarily nocturnal and have fantastic eyesight. Let these owls show you the way the next time you are feeling nocturnal and ambling about in the middle of the night.

Metal Owl Night Light offers warm light for guiding you down the hallway, or for showcasing in your favorite room. You could also use this owl as a night light for a child’s room. A friendly reminder that someone is there watching over them each night, often very helpful for children who have a hard time sleeping.

Bringing It All Together

Adding wall art with owls as the featured subject will definitely bring your home closer to the woodland owl theme you are aiming for. We are particularly fond of Maine artist Tracy Lizotte and her Owl Smooch Print, made right here in Maine! Saw Whet Owl and Boreal Owl make a perfect pair to grace any empty wall space, also both crafted in the USA. Artist Lyndi Lende created these cute creatures.

Decorating with Owls at SYW

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

Hoot, hoot! On the prowl for owls?  If you take a look around at any home decorating store, you are bound to see owls perched on just about everything.  Whether you are looking to decorate a child’s room with an avian theme, or you are in need of a touch of modern decor in your living room, owls are a perfect touch.  From owl rugs to owl lamps, Sturbridge Yankee Workshop has everything that you need to add this wise woodland creature to your home.

Start Small

When beginning to select owl themed pieces for your home, it helps to pick an item that will be small enough to add a touch of woodland charm while blending in with your current decor.  If you love the feel that the owl brings to your rooms, continue to add more owl themed pieces until you have a complete look pulled together.

To start a room off right, we recommend adding a precious lamp finial, like our Ceramic Owl Finial, shown here on the right. Lamp finials are fantastic home accent pieces, and can be added to any lamp in your home.

Light Up the Night

Owls are primarily nocturnal and have fantastic eyesight.  Let these owls show you the way the next time you are ambling about in the middle of the night.

Here on the left we feature our Owl Lamp, a perfect accent lamp for your side table.  The base of the lamp features a petite owl that looks similar to Screech-Owls.

Below, to the left, is our Owl Gourd Lantern.  This lantern is made right here in the USA from a natural dried gourd, and then carved into the desired design.

To continue adding hints of an owl theme, try placing our Metal Owl Night Light (shown bottom right) in your favorite room.

Bringing It All Together

Adding home accents and decorative pieces, such as our Carved Owl Bowl, will easily guide the decor or your room closer to an owl theme. This bowl will even work as a standalone object with your modern decor.

Made to represent the traditional carved wooden treenware of the Colonial Age, this resin bowl will present your shelled nuts or wrapped candy in an easy to access location. Please note, this bowl is not food safe.

Wonderful Wall Art

There is no better way to bring a room’s theme together than with a spectacular and modern statement piece such as our Snowy Owl Wall Panel. The snowy owl, the largest owl by weight in North America, brings even the most basic avian aficionados out for a peek at this regal bird. Adding a vertical sightline to your room will also make your walls appear longer.

Another option, our sweet Saw Whet Owl Print, is made right here in the USA.  The Saw Whet Owl, known for its repeated call that sounds like a saw being sharpened on a whetstone, adds a natural feel to your room.

New Owl Decor, Ideal for All Seasons

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

This fall at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop there are lots of new ideas on how to decorate your home. You may have noticed, owls are a plenty amongst our new items this season. Owls have become a fascinating decor trend over the last year or so, because it lends well to both modern and rustic decor; it also proves to be a wise choice alongside woodland themed decor too, offering a natural appeal.

Pictured here to the left is a new lighting option for fall, our Metal Owl Night Light. You may have seen our Barn Owl Night Light featured in a previous blog post, crafted of wood. This night light however, presents the classic owl silhouette carved from metal. The plumage or feathers throughout this owl’s body appear three dimensional, as they are slightly raised. Owls have amazing eyesight and are primarily nocturnal birds. Their larger, narrow set eyes allow for keen depth perception in the dark. Let this owl night light be the eyes you need at night, in your home for only $14.95 during our fall lighting sale. While particularly nice in autumn, the owl is a striking decor motif to use throughout all seasons, let’s look at some more options.

Next up is our made in the USA, Snowy Owl Wall Panel, seen here on the left. Notably a Snowy Owl, by the presence of yellow eyes and contrasting crisp white plumage. The dark scalloping amongst the white feathers, typically indicates a female or young bird. Snowy Owls are one of the largest and heaviest owl species in North America. So make a bold statement on a wall in your home, with this unique wall panel made from reclaimed paneled wood. For more American made wall decor highlighting this stoic bird, consider our Boreal Owl Print or Saw Whet Owl Print by artist and designer Lyndi Lende, sharing two different species of owls.

Moving on to some of our more petite owls this fall, the new Owl Sculpture is a resin sculpture with the look of carved wood. Perched in his element atop a tree stump, this owl has realistic looking green eyes that will surely grab the attention of those who pass by. Or, for a more homespun feel, consider our new Wool Felt Owls, shown below. Crafted from wool felt, this set of three cute owls truly are a real hoot. Featuring button eyes and stick noses, they are also adorned with bells, tin stars, and safety pin details. Their shaped wire feet support their weighted brown, mustard and orange bodies. Both the Owl Sculpture and set of Wool Felt Owls are perfect to display on a side table, as a centerpiece in the dining room or perhaps along your mantle. Whichever you choose, we hope you enjoy our owl themed decor for an updated look in your home, anytime of year.
