Thanksgiving Day Visitor Print Historical Roots

The very first Thanksgiving, as we understand it from our American history, was in the year of 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. After a first year in the new world, the 53 surviving Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest; with help from the Native Americans who taught them how to both grow crops on the new land and how to properly catch fish from the Atlantic Ocean. The true national holiday of Thanksgiving, as recognized by all states, began in 1863 when President Lincoln declared this ‘day of thanks’ to be held each year in November.

While only here one day of the year, Thanksgiving decorations can be showcased throughout the entire harvest season. Pumpkins, turkeys, and fall leaves and more really speak to the season this time of year. Here we have gathered together a handful of our favorite harvest themed Sturbridge Yankee Workshop items that we know will coordinate well with areas of your country home. From the simplest of items to those that really make a statement, Thanksgiving is going to look great this year!

Seasonal Statements

Colors of fall are a ones we sure can get used to. Bold oranges, reds, golds and muted greens are arranged beautifully, as if painted across the canopy of trees. Pumpkins, gourds, sunflowers, berries, and corn fields help bring these hues to life and surround us everywhere we go in the months of October and November.

Capture the essence of autumn with thematic home accents that capture the mood and color from the world around us. Warm browns, crisp orange, red and golden yellow. Who says fall leaves should be left outside on the trees?

Sturbridge Yankee Workshop Santa Showcase

Friday, December 6th, 2013
Santa has been given many names over the years. Santa, Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, St. Nick, Father Christmas and the list goes on if you begin including variations from other languages. The roots of where Santa Claus originated from stem from a combination of folklore in Germany, Scandinavia, Holland, and Great Britain.

This is where perhaps you have heard of Sinterclaas. Sinterclaas, who decides who is naughty and nice like our western understanding of Santa does, arrives by steam boat and chooses to ride a white-gray horse; as opposed to a sleigh and eight reindeer. Whatever you choose to call this jolly gift giving man in your home, he always finds a place in our hearts.
