This week’s Thursday’s Theme is all about creating a warm and inviting space for your guests to look upon when they first enter your home. Whether you have a small alcove or a grand hallway, you can create a charming and traditional design by keeping these following tips in mind.
- Focus on one furniture piece. A hallway table, a bench with hidden storage, a coat rack, a chair with an accent table (okay, that’s two), or any other piece you can think of. This will stand as the room’s point of interest, around which the rest of the space will develop. For a traditional look, stick with a neutral or muted color for the chosen furniture piece: black, brown, white; because it can always have color added to it with other decor accents.
- A ceiling pendant has a classic look in an entryway, and a lantern-style or Mason jar pendant will amp up the traditional look and give the space just enough light for greeting visitors and increasing the warm and friendly atmosphere. Just one pendant will do; more than one can start making the room feel too crowded rather than light and airy. If you are unable to incorporate a ceiling fixture, find a tabletop light or even a nightlight that evokes a traditional lantern look.
- If you do choose the table as the furniture piece, it is fine to leave it bare, especially if the table is a reproduction of a beautifully decorated and constructed antique. However, if you do want to add a little traditional flair and protection to the tabletop, a runner is the best choice. For a fresh look, display a seasonal runner or alternate your favorite runners throughout the year. A traditional runner may have details like hand stitched French knots, or maybe a long layer of appealing lace. To further decorate the table, choose functional accents like a tabletop calendar that has rustic qualities, or a writing utensil holder that is the same color as the table.
