Get The Look: Rustic Home Office

Thursday, July 25th, 2019

An inspiring home office (or den, or study) is always a very personal space, whether you can give an entire room the title of “home office” or just a corner in a common living area. In general, the ideal home office offers simplicity and rustic charm – the perfect combination for a space that doesn’t leave us feeling cluttered, while maintaining the cozy feeling of the rest of our home. We love how the desk, chair and other home furnishings are arranged below, and we have a few suggestions for how to recreate this area in your own home with decor from Sturbridge Yankee Workshop.

First off, the desk. You should always choose the type of desk or table that fits your preference and work needs. But to get the above look with the most functionality, we recommend a wood drop-leaf table or an extendable table so you can adjust it to the room and your daily tasks. For a little extra storage, choose a table with a small drawer or shelf. Don’t forget the table or desk lamp for some extra light!

As with the desk or table, the chair should offer a level of comfort and support that works for you. In keeping with the rustic look, our Ladderback Arm Chair does the job. In addition to the arms, its high back complements the comfort of the twisted paper seat.

Our next home accent will likely not come as a surprise to you. For an added layer of coziness, put an area rug on the floor. We are partial to braided rugs, and we recommend using a solid color rug or one with neutral tones to prevent the space from looking too busy.

The rest of the furnishings truly depend on how you use the office space or den, but you really cannot go wrong with a wicker or braided basket for storage, and an extra chair with a throw blanket for reading or enjoying the space without sitting at your desk. Add some wall art or your favorite country print, and keep your writing utensils and some extra paper in a writing box or bin.

Get the Look: Timeless Rustic Entryway

Thursday, July 13th, 2017

Today’s inspiration comes from a beautifully rustic entryway that offers exceptional function and the down home comforts you might find at a multi-generational homestead. You can get a similar look by shopping our catalog and looking out for antique or flea market furniture that fits the style.

The Drop Leaf Table in the room above (via Houzz) is gorgeously designed, so for a look that is both exquisite and rustic, our Harper Leaf Table fits the bill. For a larger footprint (and more tabletop functionality) our Square Drop Leaf Table offers just enough tabletop space while still fitting in a smaller room like this entryway.

While the table is the object in the center of our line of sight, the second home accent in this space that caught our eye was the Ladderback Chair.

Our Ladderbacks are handcrafted in North Carolina and we recently added an Arm Chair to the collection – just in time to create this beautiful entryway look!

Seeded Glass Hanging Lantern

Adorn yours with one of our 28 Braided Chair Pads (most in multiple colors and differing fiber content) to add a little more comfort to the chair and decorative appeal to the room.

Onion Lanterns are staples in historical farmhouses and rustic homes, and our Seeded Glass Hanging Lantern offers similar charm as the Lantern above.

Below the lantern is an Area Rug boasting rich colors and handwoven charm. Many of our Area Rugs have similar qualities, but perhaps best for this space is the Crimson Folk Art Family Rug. Its warmth is apparent even in a photo, and tells a tale of hard work, family values and natural beauty exemplified by rural life.

What is your favorite part of this entryway? Have you found the perfect pieces to make your home a rustic charmer? Share your inspiration and stories in a comment below, and if you’re interested in any of the Sturbridge Yankee Workshop home furnishings shown here, just click on their pictures.

Minimal Coffee Table Styling

Thursday, September 29th, 2016

Lavishly decorated coffee tables are beautiful for holidays and special occasions, or in a room you don’t use that often. But for the everyday, minimal-fuss decor on your coffee table can offer plenty of style with the practicality you need. Here are the basic ways to style your coffee table – and remember, less decor is more!

Glass jars and bowls are decorative in almost any arrangement, and you can add personal flair by filling them with ornaments, lights, potpourri and many other items. The single apothecary jar shown above can be placed next to magazines and books for decorative appeal, without getting in the way of your daily activities.

Trays and trugs are also versatile when it comes to decorating your coffee table, as they are available in a wide variety of sizes and can hold seasonal decoratives, fruit or electronics. If you’re in an apartment or have little counter and table space, a trug or ceramic dish on a coffee table can also serve as a place to keep your keys, money and other miscellaneous items.

Candles always look great on a coffee table, and you can employ pillar candles, tapers with decorative taper holders or tealights to create a romantic or rustic look that is not too over the top. A symmetrical look always works, or you can embellish the space around the candle with a wreath, family photos, collectibles and other small home accents. Flameless candles are ideal for a busy household or if you want a worry-free option, whereas burning candles have the aromatic element for extra appeal.
