~*Stars & Stripes Forever with Artist Jim Shore*~

Friday, June 8th, 2012

As we anticipate the festivity of the summer months, we gear up for family gatherings, backyard parties and celebrating with friends. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, we’re happy to help get your home ready to celebrate too. With all of the Americana and patriotic themed home decor items we have, today we feature a collectible sculpture that will set the tone for an inviting mantle or table display. Pictured here to the left is our new, Yankee Doodle Kitty Sculpture.

The classic patriotic character of Yankee Doodle is personified in the version of a quirky cat. Dressed of course in red, white and blue, with stars on his vest and stripes on his balloon style pants. This kitty boasts “stars and stripes forever” as he waves a flag and gives an official salute, on top of a blue stage. His curled tail is wrapped behind him, to add just the right amount of whimsy that we’ve all come to love. The artist of our Yankee Doodle Kitty is none other than the award winning artist, Jim Shore.

About the Artist: Jim Shore

Known world wide for his folk art collectibles seen in numerous retail locations, his number one status as an artist brand on the QVC shopping network, and his work with Disney (Disney Traditions by Jim Shore). Growing up in rural South Carolina, Jim having artistic parents, was introduced to a love for all things Americana and family tradition. His grandmother was actually a master quilter and from these inspiring family members, grew an understanding for patience when creating his works of art. Though despite this artistic passion, Jim actually went on to study engineering and earned a degree in business in order to make a living. In his spare time however, Mr. Shore practiced his sculpting and painting skills, dreaming of the day when the artist inside him could prevail.

“Art is something I’ve done all my life. It’s what I’ve always loved and the only thing I ever wanted to do. But making a living as an artist isn’t easy. There are thousands of very talented people out there that never got the chance to show what they can do. I’ve been lucky. Not only do I get to do what I love, I get to share it with people around the world. I’ve been given a tremendous gift and I thank God for it every day,” says Jim. After a rocky start in the art and licensing world, he eventually began his own business: Designs Americana. From there his art was out in the marketplace, waiting for the right people to notice…and they did. Partnering with Enesco, (a leader in marketing gifts, decorative accessories and collectibles), Jim was able to have the support he needed to share his talent with the world.

You may be familiar with Heartwood Creek by Jim Shore, one of his more recent lines that features the notable angle and Santa collectibles. Drawing inspiration from his roots, old world decorative techniques, American folk art and unique patch-work quilt patterns from all cultures, his handcrafted style has become most recognizable. In addition to sculpting and painting, he has also perfected the trades of gold-smithing, wood carving, staining glass, and stone sculpting. Today, this self-taught artist looks forward to creating new formats that compliment his existing brand and seeking exciting opportunities that meet his high quality of standards in art creation.

* Celebrate this Summer with our New Patriotic Sculptures *

Friday, May 25th, 2012

With the big Memorial Day weekend upon us, it’s time to celebrate. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we have lot’s of ways to help you celebrate within your decorating this season. From Memorial Day though Labor Day and 4th of July in between, red, white and blue will be easy to find with us. And while we have lots to choose from, today let’s see how our new patriotic sculptures can add festivity and cheer to your home decor.

Pictured here to the right is a new addition to the Williraye Studio collection at SYW. Meet Liberty Belle & Sam, designed by the artists and designers of Willraye Studio, Bobbe Punzel-Schuknecht and her husband, Jeff Schuknecht. The name Williraye is a combination of their middle names. “Willi” short for Jeff’s middle name William and “Raye” for Bobbe’s middle name. The joint effort shared in creating each of these whimsical characters, is one that they both are very proud of. Bobbe feels as though she is telling a story through her work and the detailed carving and painting brings them to life.

Liberty Belle wears a true Americana inspired dress of burgundy and blue; adorned with scattered stars. Her crown is cleverly crafted of a birds nest, with a bluebird of course. Sam the yellow Labrador is in high spirits as well, with his stars and stripes top hat.

Greetings from Aye Aye Adam, another new patriotic sculpture for your mantle or side table display. Adam, features hand painted details throughout his sailor inspired red, white and blue outfit. His rosy red cheeks and stick legs are the whimsical touches we love. Giving a proper salute with a paper American flag in hand. The original design is handcrafted by well-known, folk art artist and designer Lori Mitchell.

Lori has always been inspired by children’s themes and literature, old illustrations and toys. In 1999 she began making her first paper-mache pieces for the folk art world and has never looked back. Full of whimsy and charisma, her characters have won a place in the hearts and collections of folk art enthusiasts worldwide. Also new this summer, is Adam’s companion Gloria. Gloria is dressed in true patriotic style, complete with stockings and red Mary Janes. Her cute face seems surprised and in true Lori Mitchell fashion, is highlighted by her rosy red cheeks. We hope these new friends will provide that extra Americana inspired charm, for your home this upcoming season.

~ Have a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend Sturbridge Fans, from all of us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop.
