Thursday’s Theme: More Summer Decor

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

We’re following up last week’s summer décor article with a second summer décor article. We just can’t get enough of all the trends and ideas for decorating a home in the summertime, whether it’s a complete painting overhaul in every room, or a simple switching out of seasonal pillows on a sofa. Here are some of our favorite tips for going bold with your decor, and feel free to share any of your own – we would love to hear how you decorate for the summer!

Bold Summer Color

Color Those Walls!

Now that we are officially in the summer season, it’s time to move past the pastels and cute colors of spring and dive deep into bright, bold colors. All over color is warranted here, but if you are looking to just experiment with or don’t want to really commit to bold colors, paint an accent wall in a living room or use bright prints and images on the walls of your home. If you do want to fully commit, go with a color you wouldn’t normally choose. The summer is also about mixing colors (and patterns!), but if you are unsure about how a room will look, ask a painting expert at a hardware store to learn more about how to combine hues and undertones to get the most pleasing look.

Cottage Rocker in GreenMixed & Matched Furniture and Accents

Summer is also a great time to refurbish or refinish furniture – especially because you can do it outside! Take that old wooden desk chair or outside rocking chair and splash it with aqua or green paint, or go with the brightest white you can find for that end table and find a purple or green accent lamp to place on its surface. While pattern and color mixing is encouraged this summer, you can keep a room complementary by using similar furniture styles, or by matching two sofas and displaying an accent chair to draw the eye.

Outdoor/Indoor Place Settings

This category is fun because many of us will be entertaining outside this summer, and you may feel more spontaneous with outdoor décor because it’s not necessarily as permanent. We suggest using big patterned pillows on porch swings and furniture, and having fun with place settings on a table. Layer floral and printed tablecloths, runners, and placemats, or stay simple with those and go bold with colorful stemware, plates and bowls, and eating utensils. Add flair to an inside, formal dining room by doing this in the summer, and incorporate the same colors into your kitchen on a bar or breakfast nook.

Seashell Napkin

Other Accessories

Summertime is also a great time to experiment with more chic serving accessories, because you can use one silver or gold serving tray without breaking the bank with its coordinating stemware and other dishes (or maybe this is the perfect time for you to splurge!). It will add a put-together look to any backyard barbecue or party, while still maintaining the relaxed and comfortable feel we like in the summertime. A bar cart is also a Summer Floral Round Placematgreat accent to use, especially one with bold color or material that will store your favorite cocktails and mixers.

Again, we’d love to hear how you are freshening up your décor for summer, and how you’ve accomplished a bold look in your home or in the backyard. Happy summer!
