Thursday’s Theme: A Traditional Entryway

Thursday, July 30th, 2015

This week’s Thursday’s Theme is all about creating a warm and inviting space for your guests to look upon when they first enter your home. Whether you have a small alcove or a grand hallway, you can create a charming and traditional design by keeping these following tips in mind.

  1. Focus on one furniture piece. A hallway table, a bench with hidden storage, a coat rack, a chair with an accent table (okay, that’s two), or any other piece you can think of. This will stand as the room’s point of interest, around which the rest of the space will develop. For a traditional look, stick with a neutral or muted color for the chosen furniture piece: black, brown, white; because it can always have color added to it with other decor accents.
  2. A ceiling pendant has a classic look in an entryway, and a lantern-style or Mason jar pendant will amp up the traditional look and give the space just enough light for greeting visitors and increasing the warm and friendly atmosphere. Just one pendant will do; more than one can start making the room feel too crowded rather than light and airy. If you are unable to incorporate a ceiling fixture, find a tabletop light or even a nightlight that evokes a traditional lantern look.
  3. If you do choose the table as the furniture piece, it is fine to leave it bare, especially if the table is a reproduction of a beautifully decorated and constructed antique. However, if you do want to add a little traditional flair and protection to the tabletop, a runner is the best choice. For a fresh look, display a seasonal runner or alternate your favorite runners throughout the year. A traditional runner may have details like hand stitched French knots, or maybe a long layer of appealing lace. To further decorate the table, choose functional accents like a tabletop calendar that has rustic qualities, or a writing utensil holder that is the same color as the table.

New Owl Decor, Ideal for All Seasons

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

This fall at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop there are lots of new ideas on how to decorate your home. You may have noticed, owls are a plenty amongst our new items this season. Owls have become a fascinating decor trend over the last year or so, because it lends well to both modern and rustic decor; it also proves to be a wise choice alongside woodland themed decor too, offering a natural appeal.

Pictured here to the left is a new lighting option for fall, our Metal Owl Night Light. You may have seen our Barn Owl Night Light featured in a previous blog post, crafted of wood. This night light however, presents the classic owl silhouette carved from metal. The plumage or feathers throughout this owl’s body appear three dimensional, as they are slightly raised. Owls have amazing eyesight and are primarily nocturnal birds. Their larger, narrow set eyes allow for keen depth perception in the dark. Let this owl night light be the eyes you need at night, in your home for only $14.95 during our fall lighting sale. While particularly nice in autumn, the owl is a striking decor motif to use throughout all seasons, let’s look at some more options.

Next up is our made in the USA, Snowy Owl Wall Panel, seen here on the left. Notably a Snowy Owl, by the presence of yellow eyes and contrasting crisp white plumage. The dark scalloping amongst the white feathers, typically indicates a female or young bird. Snowy Owls are one of the largest and heaviest owl species in North America. So make a bold statement on a wall in your home, with this unique wall panel made from reclaimed paneled wood. For more American made wall decor highlighting this stoic bird, consider our Boreal Owl Print or Saw Whet Owl Print by artist and designer Lyndi Lende, sharing two different species of owls.

Moving on to some of our more petite owls this fall, the new Owl Sculpture is a resin sculpture with the look of carved wood. Perched in his element atop a tree stump, this owl has realistic looking green eyes that will surely grab the attention of those who pass by. Or, for a more homespun feel, consider our new Wool Felt Owls, shown below. Crafted from wool felt, this set of three cute owls truly are a real hoot. Featuring button eyes and stick noses, they are also adorned with bells, tin stars, and safety pin details. Their shaped wire feet support their weighted brown, mustard and orange bodies. Both the Owl Sculpture and set of Wool Felt Owls are perfect to display on a side table, as a centerpiece in the dining room or perhaps along your mantle. Whichever you choose, we hope you enjoy our owl themed decor for an updated look in your home, anytime of year.
