Decorating with a Rustic Cabin Feel

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Whether you’re looking to decorate your summer camp, family cabin or just want to evoke a lakeside feel in your home for the coming months, this summer you’ve come to the right place. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, we offer many ways to achieve this decorating theme. Let’s take a look below.

Cabin decor features dark colors, as usually accomplished by stained wood paneling, high wooden ceiling beams and a combination of hardwood flooring and braided area rugs. Natural elements such as birch bark accents, pinewood cabinets and stone fireplaces go a long way too. The more distressed, worn or handmade items appear within the camp inspired home, will only add to a feeling of true natural beauty. Bringing a sense of the outdoors, into the indoor environment, should be the goal; alongside an overall level of “cozy comfort” throughout the entire living space. Pictured here to the left are our Classic Country Chair Pads, which present a nice country accent in a log home setting. Coordinating Classic Country Check Curtains work well in a rustic kitchen or dining area; available in Barn Red, Mustard or Black.

Setting the tone for your Cabin Decorating theme, is easy when focused in the entryway. Our Oar Hook Rack, seen here to the right is a clever way to hang your jackets, hats and the dog leash. The handcrafted, large wooden oar features exposed wood grain and natural distressing. The top of the oar presents a rustic red paint application with three black iron hooks. Or if you prefer, place above a fireplace mantle for a decorative touch.

Remember relaxed, comfy living is key within this decor theme and that means putting your feet up. Like on our Bear Foot Rest, shown here to the left. Spoil tired, aching feet with a place to “hibernate” after a long day of work, fishing or hiking. Handcrafted of plush 100% polyester “fur,” this bear is part of our made in the USA sale, now only $189.95.

Another option at SYW for decor with functional comfort, is our new Lake House Pillow. This 100% hooked wool pillow is designed by Suzanne Nicoll and offers firm lumbar, back support on a bed or a couch. The design details a lakeside scene complete with Adirondack chairs, canoe and paddles on a deep green base.

And to round out the assortment, try highlighting blank wall space with any of our new Camping Signs. Proudly made in the USA, they are on sale now from $14.95 – $24.95, this summer at Sturbridge. Handcrafted with either a distressed green or cream painted  pinewood base with rubbed edges, these signs capture nostalgia just right. Display all together and recall camping trips with the family at the lake, summer camp as a kid, or even a great time in your backyard toasting marshmallows over a fire. Choose from Gone Fishing, Go Jump in the Lake or Sunsets & S’mores, pictured below.

Cousins Farm, Handmade Signs

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Take a look at another one of the many fabulous companies that Sturbridge Yankee Workshop has had the privilege to work with over the years. Vendor Spotlight on: Cousins Farm; featuring made in the USA products.

Tom & Kristie Cousin

Cousins Farm, a small company located in rural Wisconsin, has been handcrafting signs since 1985. Tom and Kristie Cousin have kept the design and production on their farm to a small scale over the years, in order to maintain a true handmade look and properly convey their rural values. With a team of dedicated employees, keeping it local is really important to Tom and Kristie. The white pine wood that they use to individually craft each sign is harvested from woodlots that use sustainable forest practices. While only offering their signs for the wholesale market, they present a huge selection of quality signs and all of us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop are happy to share them with you. There’s nothing like a true made in America sign to decorate the walls of your home.

Cousins Farm strives to stay current on what is new in the home decor industry, yet still retain a pulse on country and Americana styles that have been popular for years. Customers appreciate their attention to detail and ability to achieve a distressed, worn look on all of their pieces.

Sometimes that empty wall space needs some love and Cousins Farm offers numerous general and every day signs that could work for your home. To the left we have our A Bed Without a Quilt Sign. Chilly winter evenings call for extra blankets, and our Bed Without a Quilt Sign is a joyful reminder. “A Bed Without A Quilt is Like the Sky without Stars” decorates this white pine sign, with stars and a black background for your country home. A thoughtful gift for anyone who loves quilts. Below are two more signs that feature someone that is just as important to remember every day, your dogs. These signs will bring a smile to your face and warm your heart.
