Katherine Washburn has been firing ceramics since her first, albeit unrecognizable, imaginatively hued project at the age of three. Her fascination with pottery was then nurtured and trained for years as she devoted 22 years of her adult life to teaching Special Education in public school systems around the nation. In the year 2000, Kathy returned to her art full time, with her throwing wheel, artist brushes and paints, while never far away, becoming closer as she devoted her time to them. While focusing on cats and dogs, Kathy also creates custom creatures to reach her customer’s desires. | |

Country Cow Bowl
This bright bovine is ready to serve, your supper that is! Handcrafted by Vermont folk artist Katherine Washburn to showcase this farm animal with big eyes and a puff of black furry hair on its head. A red kerchief makes this cow look festive enough for even the most formal of place settings. Folk art imagery with tiny dots and wheat ears decorate three-fourths of the edge, as the hand painted image of the cow fills the rest of the bowls interior. Flare edge makes lifting this bowl a breeze, and the large size accommodates many dishes. Even better, this ceramic dish is 100% microwave and dishwasher safe. |

Celebrate Jazz in New England
Thursday, May 26th, 2011May 28th is International Jazz Day. This uniquely American musical form was born in New Orleans, but thrives all over the world. From the beginning of the 20th century, African American communities in the Southern United States merged a variety of West African and European musical traditions. A pop cultural form, it set itself apart with its use of syncopation, improvisation, and polyrhythms as well as “blue notes,” pitches sung slightly flat for effect, and “swung notes,” notes played with unequal rhythm.
Jazz has evolved over the years and spun off a number of popular varieties including, ragtime, big band, swing, dixieland, bebob, fusion, latin, funk, and hip-hop.
This summer, celebrate Americana at its best with a live Jazz performance. For a listing of New England Jazz venues and performances, check out New England Traditional Jazz Plus.
