Weekly Spotlight: Summer Clearance

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

Lakeside Mailbox CoverAt the end of the week, we will be saying so long to summer and hello to fall – in our catalog at least. For those of you not yet ready to look for new lighting to make up for less daylight, or at leaves, pumpkins and warm, natural colors, you can still find a variety of summer home accents to prolong the season. While our USA and Pillow Sale still have plenty to offer, today we are featuring five clearance items that will keep you in summer spirits, your home well decorated and your budget on track (but hurry, we can’t guarantee the availability of these items for long!).

Outdoors

Watermelon Birdhouse Flag

We’ve focused a lot on the outdoors this season, because when is there a better time to entertain outside – especially since the summer covers our nation’s birthday? Two outdoor clearance items speak to summer fun and imagery in the best ways. Our  made in the USA Lakeside Mailbox Cover is a magnetic accessory for your mailbox, and just look at the beautiful scene! Place this at the end of your lakeside cottage driveway, or at your home in the country to add a calm summer look to an otherwise unadorned outdoor space.

The second outdoor accent is the Watermelon Birdhouse Flag, featuring a colorful watermelon birdhouse inhabited by a sunny yellow goldfinch. Weather and stain resistant, you can keep this decorative flag outside all season long without worrying about the color fading or the imagery being averse to the elements. It’s also machine washable, so you can easily clean and store it until next year.

Americana Geranium RugIndoors

For an entryway or in a spacious kitchen, a cheerfully patriotic accent rug is perfect for summer. Our Americana Geranium Rug is just right for your home, as is its clearance price. Designed by artist Sandy Clough, the jute braids surround a lovely arrangement of geraniums; the red, white and blue hues are exquisitely complementary to your country home and to the season.

Sailor Labs PillowChunky Dunk Sign

Boasting just as much color and decorative flair is our Sailor Labs Hooked Wool Pillow. Offering an oceanic scene for a sofa, country chair or rustic bench, these labs will inspire you to go out and enjoy the summertime and will be there for a comfortable afternoon nap. Our fifth summer clearance home accent is a whimsical sign that caters to the humorous among us. It is made in the USA and proudly exclaims: “I don’t skinny dip…but I do chunky dunk!” The distressed appearance is perfect for your country home, whether you “chunky dunk” in a lake, ocean or in a backyard pool.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and continue to check out our USA and Pillow sale, as well as all of our Clearance items, while you still can!

~Summer Glass; Beautiful Stained Glass made in the USA

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Mystic, Connecticut is clearly a place for imaginative inspiration. Home to the largest maritime museum and the Mystic Aquarium, this coastal region between New York and Boston, originated in 1651 as primarily a seaport where locals made their living in the shipbuilding business. From the same New England town, sometimes referred to as “Mystic Country,” came the birthplace of another great business: Summer Glass.

Rebecca Bertiaume, had always wanted to turn her hobby of creating stained glass art into a dream. In 1993 she began producing original designs by combining textured glass and vibrant colors to make what she calls “bright and fun.” The original owner of the well known frozen pizza along the east coast, Mystic Pizza, decided it was time for a bigger change when she sold the company in 2001. In 2003 Summer Glass moved to a renovated studio near the Mystic River in an over 100 year old building. Rebecca’s art at Summer Glass covers a wide spectrum of themes; including of course objects from the sand and sea. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we are happy to carry a selection of Summer Glass products.

Featured here to the left is our beautiful Stained Glass Flower. Place this red daisy in the sunlight and watch how the sun dances off the surface. The flower is a handcrafted original with bright red glass petals, a sunshine yellow center and a carefully formed trim. We also offer a few other pretty glass designs; including our Stained Glass Double Heart and Large Stained Glass Heart. All of these beautiful decoratives are proudly made in the USA.

The art and technique of stained glass is over 1000 years old. You may be familiar with stained glass windows, which we see a height in popularity during the middle ages of western European churches; many of which are still in tact today. However, historians date the very first glass creations back to ancient Egypt and later note glazing methods used by the Romans. There are many ways to form artistic glass sculptures, such as the ones mentioned here, but the basis for how to generate the color in the glass remains the same. Metallic oxides added to the glass when it’s in its molten state, is how the deep hues are formed. Cobalt oxides make blue, Copper makes green and Gold or Copper can produce a red color. Once cool enough, the mixture is flexible enough to bend and shape. It can be blown using a cylinder glass or hand blown using a crown glass. The next steps will vary depending on the appearance desired, but typically the molten glass is spun or rolled out flat.

~Thank you Summer Glass for allowing us to share your story and helping us deliver beautiful stained glass products to our customers over the years!
