Meet Maine Artist: Nancy Michalak

Friday, September 14th, 2012

At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we are very excited to present the most recent additions to our framed art assortment, just in time for the Halloween season. Pictured here to the left is our new, website exclusive Pumpkin Surprise Papercut Art Framed Print. Before we go into detail about this beautiful image, let’s learn a little bit about the artist. Meet Nancy Michalak, a Maine artist currently residing in Cumberland. Nancy now teaches art in Gray-New Gloucester, and it was actually her 6th grade students that prompted her interest in papercutting during a lesson in symmetry. Attending the University of New Hampshire, this talented artist has had her work featured on the cover of Instructor Magazine. She also has participated in numerous shows across the United States, and her work is on display at a variety of prestigious galleries; including the Everson Gallery in Syracuse, New York and the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston. Nancy’s Shady Run Studios, with the addition of her silhouette art, has proven very successful. We are pleased to share her talent with our customers here at SYW.

Nancy has experimented with many art mediums throughout her artistic career, but her latest venture of papercutting has given her the recognition she deserves. Using black silhouette paper and intricate scissor work, this art form is modeled after Scherenschnitte, a German paper cutting technique.

“My designs require careful planning of lines, shapes, overall balance of the piece, plus positive and negative space that will be critical to the images success. Most of my pieces are cut continuously from one piece of paper, meaning that no part of the piece is added later, except for color embellishments,” says Nancy.

In Pumpkin Surprise, we find little witches gathering in the cemetery overgrown with pumpkins, as the sun sets in the distance and a fellow witch pops out in surprise. Continuing with the Halloween theme, our Gothic Mansion Papercut Art Framed Print shown above, depicts a spooky night at the gate of an old mansion and cute trick-or-treaters considering their curiosity. Both of these framed prints are matted and framed under glass; please note these are print reproductions of Nancy’s original work. Her style is a little bit folk art, though overall is a striking modern piece of mixed media wall art that will have you admiring for hours. Nancy has three children, Geoffrey, Clarissa and Vanessa; Vanessa actually has become quite the artist as well with her work in pastel portraits, cityscapes and more.
