Made in the USA: Clocks

Monday, January 27th, 2014
Every home needs a great clock. In fact, every room could use one, too. Keep track of the time and add a charming decorative accent to any room with American made clock options available on our website. Versatile designs featuring everything from animals to patriotic imagery will keep you busy as you browse through our selection.
Time For Some History

It has been said that the world clock is ultimately derived from the Celtic words clagan and clocca, meaning ‘bell’. Fun fact: clocks that operate silently, meaning that there are no chimes, bird songs or other indicators of the passing minutes, are commonly referred to as timepieces. Timepieces have been used for centuries to measure the passing of time. The earliest clocks, often in forms similar to sundials, relied on the sun. These clocks are all battery operated so you do not need to worry about them not working once the sun sets.

Clocks have been produced in America since the mid 1850’s, if not earlier, reported to have started in Massachusetts. Enhance any room with the timeless appeal of Americana charm. Whether put on display for the Fourth of July or kept up all year long as a tribute to the USA, patriotic pieces will be welcome additions to your current country furnishings. Patriotic Clock showcases a distressed image of our American Flag, overlaid with text reading “Land of the free because of the brave” in appealing white colored font.

Thematic Clocks

Electric clocks have been in use since 1840 when the invention of the dry cell battery made it possible to create a clock that was powered by electricity. Fun fact: the study of time is called horology. You can enjoy the time you spend studying these clocks as they all feature impressive motifs and imagery appealing to any home. Enhance a farmhouse themed kitchen, create a primitive country scene or add a beach-scape look to any room with the options shown here. Unlike the early electric clocks of centuries ago, these will operate longer.

Happy first day of summer! Here on the east coast, we sure are pleased that the summer weather has decided to come too. Could reach over 90°F by this afternoon! Perhaps many of you will celebrate by spending the day at the beach or by the water somewhere. In honor of more beautiful beach days to come, today we share how to decorate with a nautical and seaside theme. Let’s take a look below.

All of us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop are excited about the many new nautical items now offered, some exclusively on our website. One of those new items is none other than the America’s Lighthouses Coverlet, pictured on the bed here to the left. Making a lovely summer bedding option or the perfect addition to your beach themed bedroom, this coverlet is 100% cotton with a double face knitting. When decorating for the seashore, blues are your friend. The range of light blue to navy blue are accented nicely by clean whites or perhaps a seafoam green. This light bedspread offers a light blue color palette and features notable lighthouses from around the USA.

Paying attention to your floors is a smart choice when highlighting a “beachy” room. A bold area rug or runner can set the tone just right. For example our Portico Cablelock Braided Rug seen here to the left, is made of a durable 100% polypropylene that’s perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. The cablelock braided construction appears much like a sailing rope and while there are other colors available, the navy option implies the idea of sailing very nicely.

Living in Maine, we understand that coastal living really is a great way to live. And even if it snows for 6 months out of the year, the summer is a chance for us to appreciate the sea breezes, collect sea glass or perhaps enjoy the rocky coastline and off shore islands on a friend’s boat.  To instill these nautical inspired feelings in your home, it’s best to keep things feeling light and airy.

A great way to do that using Sturbridge decor, is with our delicate Seashell Lace Curtains. Shown here to the left, these easy care curtains are available in ecru or white. Showcasing an abundance of seashells, the real surprise however is the tiny sand dollar designed rod pocket on top. Speaking of seashells and sand dollars, these little sea treasures are one way you can add a touch of the beach around your home. Spend a day collecting various shells, star fish, sea glass and more, to decorate under a windowsill, on a bedside table or in the kitchen.

Once your bedding, floors and windows are complete with this decorating theme, it’s time to have some fun. At SYW, we have lots of ways to accent a beach house, cottage or your nautical home. In terms of empty wall space, we know you’ll love our Beach Rules Sign. Handmade of solid knotty pine wood, the distressed sign states the rules of  the beach: “Relax Enjoy, Relax, Enjoy.” If it’s the outside space you need a seashore accent, consider our new Sailboat Bracket & Bell. Greet guests with this well-crafted, recycled steel scroll bracket on the front or back door of your home. Hang with the nostalgic cow bell or opt for a small hanging plant instead. All of the products featured on this page are proudly made in the USA.
