For this edition of Decorating with Color, we’re zeroing in on indoor staircases. Paint, wallpaper, tile and stair treads are all excellent tools for dressing up and styling any staircase – and we hope the following looks will inspire you to try something a little different with this underestimated feature of your home.

For an easily changeable look, browse different styles of stair treads and stair runners to add a pop of color and pattern. Adding a layer of carpeting offers more textural appeal to the eye and to your feet.
One of the biggest staircase trends is embellishing just the riser – with tile, paint or even wallpaper. This adds contrast to your stairs and unexpected charm, especially if your stairs are in a hallway or small space that doesn’t allow for much styling.
The ombre look is fun for any staircase, whether you choose to decorate the riser or the entire step. This type of color variation is pleasing to the eye and can be done no matter your decorating style.
If your stairs are completely exposed, painting the entire structure one solid color will give it a sculptural quality within your home. You could then decorate with home accents that coordinate with that color to pull the entire room together.
These examples show how stunning the absence of color can be – although you could certainly carry out these examples with colorful paint. We like the contrast of the wood steps, white risers (and walls) and the black handrail and newels below; this creates a classic but chic look. And we can’t help but admire the staircase with wood steps and black risers; with a black handrail it looks quite sophisticated.
