In honor of our 60th Anniversary, we are taking a look back at the early days of Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. From our roots in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, to our current location here in Portland, Maine, we are proud of our history and how it has shaped who we are as a company today. A lot has changed in the world since 1953, but some things do remain the same. And while styles and designs have shifted over the years, for us at SYW, our commitment to quality home furnishings and home decor has never faltered.

Over the coming weeks and throughout the remainder of the year, we will be sharing various products, catalog covers, fun facts and more from SYW’s past. In a special feature on Facebook, look forward to “Hear Ye, Hear Ye, SYW Goods of Yore.” A chance for us to discuss a favorite item from 30 years ago for example, and compare it perhaps to a similar product of today. We also will be interested to hear your feedback on your preference of style or various design choices. Furthermore, on our Articles & Tips page, we will be gathering more exciting information surrounding our 60th Anniversary Celebration in a section titled “Sturbridge through the Years – Purveyor of Furnished Goods.” Here, we will go more in depth about such topics as our Shaker furniture line, our braided rugs, SYW catalog exclusives and other customer-favorite products, designers, and styles from the last 60 years.
Pictured above is an opening letter on page 2 of our 1978 catalog. The image is of our original retail store in Sturbridge. Shown here below is another except from an old catalog, explaining a bit about our history. Did you know that Surbridge Yankee Workshop was once housed in a 150 year-old mill? This is just a sampling of what we’ll be sharing, here in our blog “Shoptalk,” and on our Articles & Tips page. Don’t forget to look for us on Facebook too. As always we appreciate your business and thank you for your loyalty over the years.
