Vendor Spotlight: North Country Wind Bells of Maine

Today we shine a spotlight on a vendor of Sturbridge Yankee Workshop that creates some of our beautiful outdoor decor. And with many recent additions from them, we felt this was a good opportunity to tell you a little about their story. Below, let’s meet North Country Wind Bells of Maine.

North Country Wind Bells is a company that prides itself on the fine quality materials used in production. The Maine run business is based out of Round Pond, ME which is about 1.5 hrs from Portland; in the area we refer to as Downeast Maine, along the coast. Primarily focusing on windchimes and outdoor bells, they offer an assortment of outdoor garden decor as well. For example our Butterfly Garden Stake, which is a new addition at SYW for summer and seen here to the left. Hummingbird and dragonfly garden stake designs are also available.

Jim and May Davidson were inspired by life on the Maine coast and wanted to create something truly wonderful. In the small town of Round Pond, they, along with family and neighbors embarked on a craft unlike anything seen before. The goal was to create wind bells that would echo the distinctive and familiar tones of various coastal and harbor bells. After spending much of his life on the water as a lobsterman, Jim had come to understand the reassuring sound bell buoys can bring. Jim Davidson recorded numerous sounds of the bell and gong buoys over the years, which eventually became part of the impressive collection that exists today.

Each bell is based on Jim and his family’s interpretation of the sounds at sea and are divided into groupings based on their tones. Resulting in single, double and triple-toned bells that are appropriately titled based on the areas in the ocean or land from which they are named. Pictured here to the left is one of our Lighthouse Bells, which is available in your choice of tonal sound; ranging from the Bar Harbor, ME bell to a San Francisco, CA bell. All of the products from North Country Wind Bells are shaped and crafted from quality recycled steel. The steel is given a “living finish” and will naturally patina over time. Furthermore, the bells and other items are powder coated with a durable outdoor weathering finish to last for years to come. The bells especially, are designed to hang outdoors year-round and are ensured not to tangle, twist or break. Family pride and fine workmanship, in combination with the Eco-friendly materials they use, makes North Country Wind Bells a proud partner of SYW.

In addition to the new garden stakes mentioned above, shown here to the right is our new Loon Bracket & Bell. Made with the same superior craftsmanship and attention to detail, this bracket and bell set would be a wonderful addition to your outdoor decor this summer. The scroll bracket is available separately if desired, but the bell option offers an ode to days gone by, milking cows on a dairy farm. A moose, lighthouse and sailboat design is available for purchase on our website as well. Another new outdoor garden item from this vendor, that offers both a decorative and functional purpose, is our website exclusive, Standing Cat Garden Guard. This clever black cat will help deter pests and other rodents from taking an interest in your garden. Click on the link to learn more.
