When it gets cold, we at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop often think back to warm, feel-good foods. This recipe is over a century old and a fantastic breakfast, or accompaniment to a meal.
You Will Need:
2 C sifted flour
4 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1/2 t cream of tartar
2 t sugar
1/2 C shortening
2/3 C milk
butter
Instructions:
Heat oven to 450 degrees.
Sift dry ingredients into bowl.
Cut in shortening
Pour in all of milk.
Stir quickly with fork until dough follows fork around bowl.
Turn onto lightly floured surface.
Knead gently 10-12 strokes.
Pat out into 1/2″ thickness.
Use a drinking glass to cut into circles.
Brush with melted butter and bake on buttered sheet 10-12 minutes.
Serve as a main course by preparing the filling to our Leftover Turkey Pot Pie and heating it over the stove. Serve pored over the biscuits instead of in the pie crust.
Serve as a side to any meal.
Serve as breakfast covered in one of our special syrups, honey, or jam.
