Throwback Thursday: A Bold Room from 2005 (and style tips for today)

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

For this week’s Thursday’s Theme we’re taking it back to our Holiday 2005 catalog, and the living room below. Although this set up is over ten years old, it maintains a timeless look because of the use of staple furniture, decor and classic color.

First, the colors. If the white furniture doesn’t draw your eye into the image, the red and orange pairing certainly will. Red and orange are analogous colors (as are orange and yellow), which means they are neighbors on the color wheel. This also means that their pairing is pleasing to the eye. While the red in this room has a much more imposing presence, the scattered orange accents move the eye around the room for both a bold yet refined look. These same colors, in addition to small splashes of yellow, are found in the wall art and the quilt hanging on the walls. These help break up the solid colors to make them feel lighter and more airy, thus offering the same effect to the entire room.

Second, the furniture. Another reason why this color pairing works so well is because the furniture is pretty uniform, which allows the color to really take center stage. You may recognize the tables as pieces from our Shaker Furniture collection, and although they have undergone a few slight changes over the years, you can still count on them to coordinate beautifully with each other – no matter which color you choose. The slip-covered furniture is stunning in white here; each piece really grounds the room, and the texture of the fabric prevents it from blending in too much with the walls while still remaining neutral enough as to not clash with the bold colors already in use.

A style tip to keep in mind is when you’re investing in a piece of furniture that will be in your home for a long time, like our Shaker Tables, you can personalize and adapt them to your style in a small yet impactful way: by switching out the drawer pulls. The small wood knobs can be removed with a screwdriver, and you can add your own glass, metal, or other wood pulls.

Learn more about analogous colors here, and let us know about any bold colors you’ve experimented with. We would also love to know if you have any style tips you’ve carried with you throughout the years that have stood the test of time. Leave a comment below!

2017 Home Trend: Pantone’s Color of the Year

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Back in December, Pantone released its Color of the Year for 2017: Greenery. This color is inspired by the renewing, reviving and reinvigorating qualities of spring and the newness of the natural world in the days after winter, and as such, will reflect natural and soft lighting for a more refreshed look every day. While you look for new and fresh ways to decorate your home this year, look to nature and this color for inspiration in creating a peaceful escape in every room. Take a look below at some of the simple and more involved ways for incorporating Greenery into your home decor.

To the Walls

Paint an accent wall or an entire room in Greenery to brighten a space and its decor. As last year’s comeback kid, wallpaper is also a great option, and can add this color to a pantry, closet or entryway if not in a family room or country kitchen.

Pillows and Bedding

If you like to change up your bedding every year, or haven’t for a while, try green bedding in the form of a quilt or comforter. Adding throw pillows will create more comfort, and are great for accenting a bench, ottoman or accent chair in your bedroom.

In the Kitchen

Greenery looks exceptional on kitchen cabinets, especially in a country kitchen where wood and natural materials thrive in an island, the walls, chairs and flooring. Depending on your tastes, a muted bright green hue may be more complementary, but just as charming.

On Furniture

Make a statement with a green chair, ottoman or switch out a lampshade for one in Pantone’s Color of the Year. Contrast with wood furniture or other upholstered furnishings to create a cheerful and beautiful family room, den or other space.

Actual Greenery

If you’re not quite ready for a paintbrush, new furniture or an entirely new room, you can never go wrong with actual greenery! Plants with lush leaves and tall stalks can add depth to a room, color to home accents, and maybe most importantly, can brighten your mood.
