You may have noticed in the pages of the Sturbridge Yankee Workshop Winter 2013 Catalog, that we have a few items that pay tribute to one particular fruit. That’s right, none other than the pear.
Pears are nice to display this time of year because they are a fruit that boasts a couple delicious winter varieties. This is including the Bosc Pear, which features a yellow-brown skin and is perfect for baking and cooking. Caramelized or poached pear recipes are common during the winter months, as they are a comforting and heavier dessert best suited for large meals and holiday gatherings; a very typical occurrence this time as well.
Influence on Religion & Culture
Speaking of the holidays, the pear is even more popular in the winter due to its reference in a a seasonal favorite tune, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The ‘partridge in a pear tree’ is repeated several times throughout the song and is said to represent the relationship between Christ and Mankind. Beyond the Christian faith however, the pear and the pear tree from which it comes, have influenced cultures around the world for centuries. The Greek and Roman mythology suggests the sacredness of the fruit to three goddesses; including Pomona the Italian goddess of harvests and gardens. The Ancient Chinese believed that the pear symbolized
immortality, as the pear trees themselves live for a long time. They said that the pear was important to appreciate in writing and mythology, as a way to interpret the longevity of life. In modern times, pears continue to be represented in art and design because of the further belief that the tree and its fruit share everlasting affection. In folklore and numerous romance novels, experts note an equivalence between the pear tree and the bond of two people who are in love.
Decorate with Pears
Pictured above is our new Pear Berry Mini Wreath. Accented with three faux pears, green berries, and tiny white dogwood flowers, the wreath will provide contrast to a neutral colored wall in your home. Use traditionally as a wreath on a wall or door, or you can also use it as a festive candle ring centerpiece. Shown to the left is our new Pear Chair Pad, an exclusive design for SYW by artist Dianna Swartz. Hand hooked wool presents the fruit in shaded color, and is most likely modeled after the Bosc Pear mentioned above. A large golden pear with forest green leaves is framed by a berry and vines wreath. The design lends well to primitive home decor themes, but also could be used as a fresh accent in modern or contemporary decor. A matching Pear Hooked Wool Pillow is available too, if you wish to create a cohesive look in any room of the home.
