Downton History

Do you consider yourself an avid member of the Downton Abbey™ fan club? Downton Abbey™, for those of you unfamiliar, is a hit British period television show set in the post-Edwardian era. The story follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family in their fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey. Throughout the series viewers have watched as modern (to the time) events have affected the family and their hard working staff.

Bring a bit of Downton magic into your home with themed accents inspired by this iconic time in British history. Downton Abbey™ Valance and Shower Curtain each feature a double ruffle accented by vertical stripes in iron and cream ticking stripes that will do wonders for your bathroom. Imagine the exclusive retreat you can create where luxurious baths are only interrupted by the occasional sip of quality British tea.

Wherever you choose to display these period inspired pieces, you can be sure that your friends, whether they are fans of Downton Abbey™ or not, will appreciate the stately welcome.

Fun fact: by the third series, Downton Abbey™ was one of the most watched shows in the world.

Decorating with a Nautical & Beach Theme at SYW

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Get ready for summer with Sturbridge Yankee Workshop’s assortment of Nautical and Beach themed decor. With a a wide assortment of home accents, wall decor, lighting and flooring, you can easily decorate your home with this theme for the coming months.

Seashell Lace Curtains Seashells in Lace

Seashells, starfish and other shoreline sea life come to mind when thinking of spending time on the coast. At Sturbridge we have plenty of seashells, but we suggest making a statement of your nautical or beach theme with our Seashell Lace Curtains; pictured here to the left.

A collection of seashells and sea life complete the look of these white sheers. Tiny sand dollars uniquely create therod pockets of the tiers and valance. Purchase our easy-care polyester curtains this spring and receive Free Shipping, now during our Annual Spring Sale.

Lantern Lighting

We all love spending time by the seashore, taking a beach vacation, or the feeling of a fresh ocean breeze. So if you can only enjoy the beach in the summer, decorating an area of your home with a nautical or beach theme is a nice alternative to enjoy that feeling year round.

Consider lighting options to help achieve your theme, such as our Seeded Glass Wall Lantern shown here to the right. In your choice of finish, the painted steel encompasses a seeded glass shade and is supported by a round wall plate with curved hook to hang. This wall lantern works well both on indoor walls and outdoor, mounted on the exterior of your home.

Life Is Good Beach Clock Beach Time

Here at SYW, there are lots of ways to pay tribute to the beach with options for your walls too. Next, we present our Life Is Good Beach Clock, which would look nice displayed in a sun room or other room with an open floor plan. Offering a cottage appeal, it’s also proudly made in the USA.

As seen here to the left, the clock features a painted blue and white background that resembles wood paneling. It’s also slightly distressed to give a weathered look. “Life is good at the beach” is a sentiment all fans of the ocean can relate to.

Seashore Floors

Not to be forgotten amongst your nautical or beach themed room, is your floor space. Whether you’re decorating a casual living space indoors or a covered porch outside, this next item is a must-have.

Our Indoor/Outdoor Seashore Rug pictured to the right, is available in the bright red as shown, or blue. On top of either bold hue, we find a design of various creatures from the sea. A seashell, starfish, crab and seahorse all have their place. But of course note to be missed, is a large lobster in the rug’s center.

~* Nautical Decorating with SYW

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Happy first day of summer! Here on the east coast, we sure are pleased that the summer weather has decided to come too. Could reach over 90°F by this afternoon! Perhaps many of you will celebrate by spending the day at the beach or by the water somewhere. In honor of more beautiful beach days to come, today we share how to decorate with a nautical and seaside theme. Let’s take a look below.

All of us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop are excited about the many new nautical items now offered, some exclusively on our website. One of those new items is none other than the America’s Lighthouses Coverlet, pictured on the bed here to the left. Making a lovely summer bedding option or the perfect addition to your beach themed bedroom, this coverlet is 100% cotton with a double face knitting. When decorating for the seashore, blues are your friend. The range of light blue to navy blue are accented nicely by clean whites or perhaps a seafoam green. This light bedspread offers a light blue color palette and features notable lighthouses from around the USA.

Paying attention to your floors is a smart choice when highlighting a “beachy” room. A bold area rug or runner can set the tone just right. For example our Portico Cablelock Braided Rug seen here to the left, is made of a durable 100% polypropylene that’s perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. The cablelock braided construction appears much like a sailing rope and while there are other colors available, the navy option implies the idea of sailing very nicely.

Living in Maine, we understand that coastal living really is a great way to live. And even if it snows for 6 months out of the year, the summer is a chance for us to appreciate the sea breezes, collect sea glass or perhaps enjoy the rocky coastline and off shore islands on a friend’s boat.  To instill these nautical inspired feelings in your home, it’s best to keep things feeling light and airy.

A great way to do that using Sturbridge decor, is with our delicate Seashell Lace Curtains. Shown here to the left, these easy care curtains are available in ecru or white. Showcasing an abundance of seashells, the real surprise however is the tiny sand dollar designed rod pocket on top. Speaking of seashells and sand dollars, these little sea treasures are one way you can add a touch of the beach around your home. Spend a day collecting various shells, star fish, sea glass and more, to decorate under a windowsill, on a bedside table or in the kitchen.

Once your bedding, floors and windows are complete with this decorating theme, it’s time to have some fun. At SYW, we have lots of ways to accent a beach house, cottage or your nautical home. In terms of empty wall space, we know you’ll love our Beach Rules Sign. Handmade of solid knotty pine wood, the distressed sign states the rules of  the beach: “Relax Enjoy, Relax, Enjoy.” If it’s the outside space you need a seashore accent, consider our new Sailboat Bracket & Bell. Greet guests with this well-crafted, recycled steel scroll bracket on the front or back door of your home. Hang with the nostalgic cow bell or opt for a small hanging plant instead. All of the products featured on this page are proudly made in the USA.
