Our Shortbread Pans Are Not Just for Baking

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

We have three new additions to our Shortbread Pan selection at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. We love these ceramic baking pans because not only do they make delicious cookies, but they can also make for a fun crafting tool (as we’ll show you below). But first, what is shortbread exactly? Let’s take a closer look.

What is Shortbread?

Shortbread is traditionally a Scottish dessert, but has taken a few different forms throughout history. During Medieval times, shortbread, literally was a short-bread; simple dried bread that when hardened had sugar added. It became widely popular among individuals who could afford luxury and Mary, Queen of Scots saw to it that she made her mark on the recipe too. What was later named “petticoat tails” was her idea of cutting the shortbread into wedges and flavoring them with caraway seeds. For many centuries it was a dessert only reserved for special occasions and the wealthy. In Shetland, an island of Scotland, they still to this day break shortbread over the heads of newlyweds as they enter their new home.

Some call it a biscuit, some call it a cake, but most refer to it as a type of cookie. Actually, this cookie in modern times hasn’t veered to0 far from its original form. The basic ingredients are 3 parts flour, 2 parts butter and 1 part sugar; type of sugar or flour used may vary. You can bake them individually as traditional cookies, however the idea is to have them be level and even in order to ensure they are cooked perfectly; thus having a need for quality made shortbread pans, like our Meadow Flowers Shortbread Pan (seen above), an Irish Lace Shortbread Pan, or our Butterfly Garden Shortbread Pan (seen below).

Get crafty with Flower Cones!

Another use for your ceramic shortbread pan is to use the mold to create beautiful flower cones or cone shaped baskets, to fill with either hard candies, potpourri, dried or fresh flowers.

What You’ll Need: 1 ceramic shortbread pan, 1 package of paper making linter (easily found at your craft store), sieve, sponge, kitchen towel, hot glue, scissors, paints, lace, and 15-30” of satin ribbon.

1. Make up a batch of paper pulp. Pour about 2 cups of pulp into a sieve to drain for about thirty seconds

2. Pour pulp into round ceramic pan; smooth out evenly so edges are even.

3. Sop up excess water with sponge and then use your towel to press the pulp into all the details of the mold.

4. Allow the paper to completely dry in the pan. (leave over night or put in the oven at 150° for 4 hours)

5. Carefully peel paper out of mold; you may need to use a knife to loosen the edges.

6. Trim any edges needed of the paper casting. Cut in half. Get creative and paint any decorations you would like.

7. Crease the paper casting along the scored lines and fold it together to form a cone. Run a bead of hot glue down one edge and glue the cone together. Here you can glue a lace trim if you would like along the inside of the top.

8. Glue the ends of your ribbon inside, onto either side of the cone to form a “handle.” Tie an additional bow if you like. Once everything has dried, you now are ready to fill your basket with whatever decorative or flowers you desire. Hang on a doorknob or give as a thoughtful gift to a friend.

Show Off Your Pet Appreciation with Artist John Golden

Monday, March 19th, 2012

With this coming Friday marking National Puppy Day, we thought it might be fun to feature a line of our dog prints which will surely show off your dog’s true colors. These vibrant, abstract-like paintings by artist John Golden offer portraits of individual dogs, representing their specific dog breed very well. If you or someone you know recently brought a dog home, any of our prints pictured below would make a great gift. Or, perhaps you already have a loving family dog, in which case show your pet how much you appreciate him or her by displaying one of our Eco-friendly dog prints on a wall at your home.

Pictured here to the left is our Boxer Print. Displaying a very distinguished animal showing off his radiant colors and distinctive jaw bone. Boxers are known for their faithfulness and obedience towards their owners, yet are also extremely playful with trusted companions. The boxer’s coat contrast nicely with the bright blue background. As with all of John Golden’s prints at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, the name of the particular dog breed is written abstractly above the dog’s head.

At an early age, the artist John Golden began to express himself through art and was destined for a life full of artistic ventures that would cover a variety of mediums. At age 11 he amazingly produced work in linoleum block prints; which is a print making technique using a “carved” sheet of linoleum and then pressed on paper to create a mirror image of the cut out design. At age 14 he produced a series of ink and pen renderings of North Carolina lighthouses. Growing up in North Carolina, he was surrounded by beautiful landscapes, churches and other buildings that inspired him. Throughout high school he continued to develop his own artistic taste and talent.

John attended Appalachian State University and earned a degree in digital art; he did however take many courses in photography and gained an appreciation and passion for that as well. The years after college were filled with an experimentation of painting and illustration; working day and night at various design jobs. Later, his work came to encompass projects for the Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and the Animal Planet, just to name a few. During this time, along with other past experiences, he gained a skill set that included animation and motion design.

Seen here to the left is another fabulous dog print by the artist, our Dalmatian Print. Featuring a happy spotted puppy who also contrasts nicely with his bright red background. The print delightfully depicts this wonderful breed known as much by their elegance, as well as their endurance. All of John Golden’s dog prints at Sturbridge have an almost abstract appearance and display floating dog bones within the background. All are also exquisitely laminated and framed in a beautiful espresso box frame, made of 98% recycled materials in Vermont; making these framed prints an Eco-friendly choice. We are proud that these prints are produced by artisans, right here in the USA.

In 1999 John formed John W. Golden Desin, a multi-media design company with a concentration on design work and illustration for print, broadcast and web fields. In 2007 though, he began to focus solely on creating and selling his original art. Today his work covers a variety of themes, with a large portion of that work showcasing his breathtaking photography skills. Genres include: historic, rivers & coasts, nature, still life, urban and many more. His digital art includes unique themes such as: robots, rockets & space and gorgeous landscapes. ~Thanks John Golden, all of us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop wish you the best in your future artistic endeavors.

~Whimsical Williraye Folk Art… New for Spring

Monday, March 5th, 2012

Distinctive, unexpected, classic and fresh – Sturbridge Yankee Workshop presents our spring collection of highly collectible Williraye Studio resin sculptures for your home! These sought after folk art figurines and home accents are created through the creative mind of Bobbe Punzel-Schuknecht and partnered with the accomplished carving talents of her husband Jeff Schuknecht. Their art studio sits nestled in the rolling hills of rural Wisconsin, where life on the farm is expressed in their art.

Jeff & Bobbe

The name Williraye is a combination of their middle names. “Willi” short for Jeff’s middle name William and “Raye” for Bobbe’s middle name. The joint effort shared in creating each of these whimsical characters, is one that they both are very proud of. Bobbe feels as though she is telling a story through her work and the detailed carving and painting brings them to life. In their spare time they enjoy life on the farm and continue collecting various antiques together. They are both very pleased that through their work they are touching the lives of folk art lovers everywhere.

New for the Spring 2012 catalog, we have four new whimsical figurines that are perfect for spring time decorating. Seen here to the left is our friendly Farm Life Farmer Sculpture; as part of our Farm Life Collection. Ready for a hard day’s work on the farm, he’s sporting a heavy pair of overalls and a wide brimmed straw hat. Even the rooster, lazy dog and cat peeking out of his pocket, know it’s time to begin. Also included in this collection is the Farm Life Farmer’s Wife Sculpture. She too is ready to complete her daily chores on the farm, all the while displaying a warm smile. She wears a long striped apron and carries her barnyard friends along for the day. Last, but certainly not least, is our Farm Life Cow Sculpture to round out the collection. Featuring a young boy atop a large cow with puppies and bluebirds in tow, this happy go lucky group is having a grand time on the farm. If you look closely the boy carries an ice cream cone, while the cow tries to sneak a lick. Display all together for your own inviting farm scene on a mantle or side table this spring.

Another welcomed addition from the Williraye Studio family, our Girl with Bunnies Sculpture is ready to hop into your home for the coming season. Whimsically dressed of course and carrying one large happy bunny, this friendly group is packed and ready to go with lots of carrots in tow. Details are seen on the realistic looking woven basket, pink bunny ears and texture in the girl’s brown pig tails. This would make an ideal Easter or spring birthday gift for the Willraye Studio collector.

All of the Williraye Studio sculptures are reproduced from an original hand sculpted mold, using centuries-old techniques and hand painted details that are then transferred beautifully into the resin figurines we love. Grace your country home with any of these Williraye Studio collectibles for welcoming spring time decorative accents that will be around for years to come.

~Thanks Bobbe Punzel-Schuknecht & Jeff Schuknecht for sharing your creative designs with us at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop!
