Think Green This Spring

Green is currently a very popular decorating color. Whether it’s a painted green room or green accents throughout your entire home, green is an extremely versatile color as you will see below. Green is a color that comes to mind when “thinking spring” because when plants, flowers and trees begin or continue to grow, spring is a time for that rebirth and rejuvenation to occur. This refreshing feeling can be carried over to the decor in your home with the use of green.

With the beginning of spring just around the corner, having some green accents within your home décor will instill a feeling nature and the outdoors for months to come. Awaken any room with our Potted Rosemary Candle, seen here to the left. Made in the USA, a design of pretty green topiaries is featured on the jar. Rosemary is an aromatic herb that has been used for centuries in teas, cooking, and potpourri; today it is one of the most popular herbal scents for candles.

Green Indoors and Out

Green is said to be one of the easiest colors on the eyes; unique to any other color because our eyes actually rest upon or recognize green to actually interpret the other colors. Therefore green can also improve your vision! We know that green is calming and that is why purposely, before people are brought onto a live television set, they are often put in a green room to relax and calm their nerves.

At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we have a lot to offer when it comes to green color options throughout our lighting, home accents, furniture and rugs categories. But in honor of spring, add some green decorative accents to the area outside your home as well. Those of you with indoor/outdoor living spaces like  sun rooms, patios, decks or garden areas, will likely be spending a lot of time there this upcoming season as the warmer weather arrives. Our Indoor/Outdoor Pillows are the perfect solution, as seen here to the left in one color option fitting for our green theme: Green Lattice. These pillows are equally suited for your living room sofa or propped on a patio bench for added style and comfort outside. Made of 100% polyester, the fabric is durable and manufactured with a tough weather-resistant material with the look and feel of cotton. Another color choice you might enjoy for a green pillow accent is the Oatmeal Stripe option of this pillow, featuring a green and creamy oatmeal stripe pattern, with the subtle incorporation of a pale pink; perfect for spring decorating!

The many shades and hues of green are what has made this color a widespread, gender neutral color. The lighter and softer greens are correlated with nature and spring as seen above, while the darker and deeper greens are understood more conservatively with a symbolism of wealth. Money is referred to simply as “green” many times and perhaps painting a room or your entire house in this color will bring a serious of good fortune and luck. Consider decorating with green this spring and you’ll be pleased with all the benefits it can offer your both your home decor and your life.

Not Your Typical Birdhouse

Heartwood, a company based in Florence, Mississippi is the amazing manufacturer of the beautiful birdhouses offered here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. Originating as a small Saturday craft show business in 1992, Lynda and Jerry Glass began making nature inspired products to sell at various “festival days” across the state. After much demand from the community, houses much like the ones pictured below became the only thing they made. With interest from a local merchant and encouragement from friends, Heartwood commenced on a journey to market their products nationally. In 1998, their hard work proved to be a huge success, as orders started filing in from numerous stores and catalogs all over the U.S. for these unique and stylish birdhouses.

For almost 20 years, Heartwood Architecture for the Birds, has been committed to innovation within the nature products industry and providing 100% satisfaction to their customers. At Sturbridge we are proud to carry these gorgeous, made in the USA birdhouses, that could become the favorite new home of birds in your backyards and gardens some day soon.

Colorful Homes

Pictured here to the left is our collection of Bluebird Birdhouses, which offer a simple design for the small bluebirds. Truly American (they range only on the American continent), bluebirds suffered a decline in the last century after the introduction of European starlings and house sparrows; larger competitors that steal bluebird nest holes. Thanks to bluebird trails and other efforts, bluebirds have made a comeback. Our Bluebird Birdhouse features a front sloping shingled roof and a distressed paint application in your choice of a rainbow of colors. **The standard shingled roof created by Heartwood is designed with special machinery that is distinctive from any other worldwide.

A similar design though slightly more petite in style, is found in our collection of Fruit Coops Birdhouses. The sweetest little birds in the world deserve nothing less than the sweetest little houses in the world and we do mean sweet. Our Fruit Coops are an artful gathering of all the best features that attract birds and bird lovers: natural beauty and comfort, in a bountiful harvest of fruit colors. Adorable alone, these little beauties are even better displayed together. So collect them by the bunch and have your yard or garden blooming with color and bursting with song.

Taking credit for the bulk of the designs is none other than Jerry himself. His focus throughout the early stages is to focus on quality and longevity. The majority of Heartwood birdhouses are constructed of heavy, deep swamp cypress wood. They use this type of lumber because it is the most naturally rot-resistant wood growing in America. The entire process of design, cutting, fabrication, painting and finishing is all done in the the Heartwood office and factory in Mississippi.

                                                                             A True Love for Nature

Heartwood prides themselves on their ability to maintain an environmentally friendly facility throughout all of their production. The cypress wood used is also a naturally regenerating wood; when a tree is harvested, the stump automatically regenerates a new sapling. In addition, Heartwood only purchases cypress wood that has been harvested in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council and wood that is within a 2 hour drive away from the factory. Furthermore, Heartwood recognized an opportunity in the furniture manufacturing business. To be of standard perfection, wood used for furniture is typically required to be exactly 16 feet long and any leftover could go to waste. Heartwood uses the excess salvage wood to create their birdhouses; thus not ever cutting a single tree!

Within the Heartwood factories, the cutting and drying process is low carbon. The zinc coated fasteners, brass screws and exterior adhesives have a dual purpose of support and protection from harmful weather elements. All of the paint used to give the houses their beauty is 100% acrylic latex; which is completely non-toxic. Even more impressive is their use of local paint store’s stock of mis-tinted paint to form their own medium gray color; a result that occurs naturally from mixing all colors together. And you guessed it, their shipping is eco-friendly too. The boxes used to ship their product are made from post consumer fiber and inside are packed with clean and recycled unprinted newsprint, salvaged from a local daily newspaper!

Pictured above is perhaps a more traditional style birdhouse, our Cape Cod Birdhouse. Featuring a rich semi-transparent stain, you have a choice of Blue Pickle, Celery, Redwood, Smoke Grey or Whitewashed. The Heartwood experience and commitment is exemplified in all the birdhouses mentioned here, as well as these others listed below. We’re proud to offer this amazing birdhouse architecture exclusively on our website, Sturbridge Yankee Workshop:

Lift Your Spirits this Winter with Floral Accents from SYW

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Decorating with bright and colorful flowers in your home is such a pleasure, thanks to Sturbridge Yankee Workshop’s wonderful array of floral decorating items. The beauty of our flower and floral themed items for your home creates coziness, warmth and a place your family will want to come home to. Bring nature’s lovely creations indoors and display them on walls, rugs, quilts and anywhere else you want to add a floral accent. Let the natural world inspire you!

Flowers for Your Wall

When it comes to floral themed wall decor, Sturbridge has a lovely variety to choose from. First, featured to the left is our Sunflower Seed Sign. Based on an old seed packet, this cheery Sunflower Seed Sign bursts forth to light up any room. A wonderful wall decoration for any time of year, that adds nostalgic charm to your country home due to its vintage design; proudly made in the USA. Another option is our gorgeous Four Seasons Flowers Wall Plaque. Delicate daffodils herald in spring, bold sunflowers dance in the summer horizon, hardy chrysanthemums mimic the artistry of fall and beautiful poinsettias make the perfect centerpiece on a holiday table. Celebrate the changing colors of landscapes and blooms with this primitive folk art plaque Four Season’s Flowers by Michaela Schrader. The plaque goes through a twelve step process to adhere the image to wood, giving it a ‘canvas painting’ appearance.

Pastel Flowers, Bright Flowers

At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop there are different levels of floral decor. Some items offer a more muted or pastel color palette of flowers and others present bright, bold hues. Our Hydrangea Basket Rug seen here to the right, adds a lovely garden accent to your home, as a welcome rug or accent rug near the kitchen sink. A basket brims with purple and blue hydrangeas, bringing nature indoors. Bordered in multi-braid pattern that highlights the center image. Natural 100% jute braid creates durability and is of course, eco-friendly.

In contrast, our Flowery Garden Rug, will provide a different look to your floors. Bright blooms cheer up your country home in this easy-care rug, designed by Gail Flores. This accent rug can go outdoors too, due to it’s fade resistant nature and can stand up to heat and cold. A soft rug to welcome guests with sunshine in the entryway or a pop of floral in the bathroom; polypropylene and acrylic material.

Floral Accents

Flowers can grow in the smallest of places, “popping” up where you might least expect them. Consider any of these items when looking for a fantastic floral accent. Our Flower Hook pictured here to the left is made here in Maine of wrought iron metal. We love the charming design of these posies, yet they also provide a practical purpose too. Use the hooks to hang hats, scarves and keys in your front hallway or mudroom. In the kitchen, it helps organize potholders and kitchen towels. It’s even cute enough for your bedroom, for a place to stash jewelry and scarves.

Displaying another beautiful arrangement of flowers, is our Brown Floral Throw. Warm yourself up with the handcrafted chocolate floral print featuring lilies, roses and hydrangea. The real treat is the skillful accent of vermicelli stitching. Reversing to multi-stripe pattern, this 100% cotton throw matches with our Brown Floral Toss Pillow. Lastly, by certainly not least our Stained Glass Flower will surely brighten your mood. Made in Connecticut, you can easily place this red daisy in the sunlight and watch how the sun dances off the surface. Each flower is a handcrafted original with bright red glass petals, a sunshine yellow center and carefully soldered edges. A wonderful gift for giving, hanging in windows, and an everlasting pick-me-up, no water needed :)
