Maine Inspiration for Your Floors

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Having a respect and appreciation for nature, while understanding the beauty of Maine and all it has to offer, is a talent that Maine artist Harry Smith knows hows to capture in his work. We are proud to carry a selection of Harry Smith’s designs on some of our 100% jute accent rugs. His artwork evokes feelings of summers past, peaceful countrysides and vacations spent in both rural and coastal Maine. Currently, Harry is living and working in an old sea captain’s home of the 1860’s, on Mt. Battie along side the coast of Camden Hills (Down East coast of Maine) with his wife Marsha. The home provides inspiration to all aspects of his work, due to the rich nature that surrounds him.

Seen here to the left is a new rug offered at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop that could be used as an accent rug or doormat in your home. A multi-colored, braided border frames the image of a red covered bridge surrounded by forest. There is an emphasis of green within the colored braid, highlighting the lush, Evergreen trees ever so nicely. We know you’ll love this Covered Bridge Rug, as it really is artwork for your floor. Made of 100% natural jute, this rug offers a tranquil moment in an entryway or hallway of your home. As with all our jute rugs, made from a biodegradable fiber, it is an eco-friendly choice.

Another option to inspire Maine living, is none other than
our Blueberry Rug. Blueberries and Maine have become synonymous over the years as it is our official state fruit, producing 25% of the low bush blueberries in North America. These treasured little blueberries are seen here in a small basket, peraps after a long day picking in the fields. Atop a bush of more blueberries, the image is set against a cream background and displays a distinctive deep blue braided border.

On a daily basis you might find Harry sketching various Maine objects, of wildlife or food, while also creating original designs in his studio. He is not just a painter though, as we know him at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. Harry is also an accomplished author, illustrator, sculptor, graphic designer and miniaturist. His books include such titles as, ABC’s of Maine and Windjammers of the Maine Coast. He is featured in “Who’s Who in American Art,” as well as on Early American Life’s list of “America’s Top 200 Traditional Craftsman.”

Other Harry Smith designs at SYW include those featured on our Lobster Rug and our Portland Head Light Rug; both presenting the true beauty that is, Maine.

New Shaker Furniture Designs at Sturbridge; made in the USA

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Simplicity, purity and utility have been the founding cornerstones of Shaker furniture, design and living for nearly as long as America has been a nation. In 1774, Ann Lee arrived in New York with nine followers of a religious sect known as the Wardleys. They settled near Albany, where they developed into a community completely dedicated to spiritual living. Because their rituals included shouting and trembling, the religion’s followers became known as Shakers; thought to have been derived through combining the words ‘Shaking’ and ‘Quakers.’ Over the next 106 years, the Shaker movement grew to include nineteen religious communities scattered from Maine to Ohio to Florida, with a following of around 6,000 members. This included the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine, founded in 1783 – the last active Shaker community, located just a few towns over from us at Sturbridge.

The Shakers sought to apply harmony and order to every aspect of life. As they put it, “Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live and as if you were to die tomorrow.” Simple, honest style and fine craftsmanship are the hallmarks of Shaker design. Here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, we have a large selection of furniture that features the clean, simple lines this style is known for. With all shaker furniture, it is important that the piece have a functional benefit as well. Style and practicality is what you’ll find with our existing customer favorite and new shaker products.

Pictured here to the left is our Shaker Desk. The desk’s tapered legs highlight the smooth table surface for work and computer use. A single front drawer easily pulls out to store important paperwork or crafting materials. Our Shaker Desk is great because with the choice of either a chestnut or golden oak stain, it will coordinate with all home decor styles. If you need more space, we have a Large Shaker Desk, which offers two drawers instead.

Another new Shaker option at SYW is our Shaker Side Cabinet, seen here to the left. This side cabinet is great because it doubles as both a storage cabinet and an accent or end table. Designed to fit into smaller spaces, a front cabinet door opens to a spacious interior, while a bottom shelf and top table surface offer additional display space. This distinctive piece is also available in the chestnut (shown) or golden oak stain.

All of the new product mentioned here is proudly made in the USA of American hardwood that complies with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative of Northeast forests. A five step finishing process protects the furniture from moisture or stains; ensuring its durability and longevity for years to come in your home.

Adeline Halvorson

Artist and designer Adeline Halvorson is one of two artists that design our beautiful and realistic pet doorstops. The second, Leslie Anderson, we will learn about next. Adeline knew at an early age that she wanted to be an artist. She had a rural upbringing which exposed her to animals and perfect landscapes on a daily basis. Her one true love though and what became her favorite animal, is a horse. After years of riding and grooming these gorgeous mammals, Adeline truly came to understand the anatomy and muscle movement of the horse. This has allowed her to paint exquisite detail and life like images of all types of animals including ones like the cats seen below; but especially the equine subject matter. Her breathtaking and detailed paintings are part of numerous corporate collections. In 2001, Adeline was featured in Country Women Magazine. She is also the recipient of a long list of awards, recognizing her artistic talent. Most recently in 2009, she received the “Best in Show Flatwork” and “Artist’s Choice” awards at the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede Art Auction. Also in 2009, Adeline received the “People’s Choice Award” at the Art of the West Show. Adeline now lives in Calgary, in the Alberta province of Canada.

Adeline Halvorson spends a lot of her time these days researching and creating new artwork for the many vendors and collections she contributes too. Adeline notes that she has developed her own unique techniques in the mediums of pastel and acrylic paint. Seen above on the left is our Orange Tabby Cat Doorstop. This striking feline is created through a unique screen printing process on 100% cotton. This method produces a very realistic looking cat that could be used in an entryway or living room of any home to welcome in family and friends. Features a weighted bottom and filled with a traditional poly-fill to stand up strait on the floor or a bench.

Leslie Anderson

Maine artist Leslie Anderson only began painting several years ago as a form of stress relief from her intense high-tech career. She never knew it would turn into what is has today; a way of life that has truly changed her. Recently moving to Maine full time, after spending many half years in Sedgwick area. Leslie loves the landscape of down east Maine and this shows in her lovely scenic paintings. She typically paints a variety of outdoor scenes and her ability to paint images of floral bouquets is simply stunning. Perhaps this is due to her close relationship with arranging, cutting and growing flowers. Her husband Dan Nygaard, is the owner of Dan’s Flower Farm at the Stonington Market. Here, they share a space for Dan’s flower design and an art studio/gallery for Leslie. Leslie often does commission work for individuals who want her to “come paint” at their homes and re-create scenic views from homeowner’s backyards or windows, to frame and treasure for years to come.

Seen here above is our new, website exclusive Bull Dog Doorstop. For any Bull Dog lover, this is a must have as it captures the character of a Bull Dog just right; looks a little frightening with his bottom over-bite but really is a loving and cute dog. Details are achieved in the white, tan and brown shading of his fur. Produced through the same silk screen printing process as described above, both doorstops mentioned here are proudly made in New York, U.S.A.
