Decorating in Farmhouse Style

Thursday, July 21st, 2016

Farmhouse style is all about rustic decor, primitive accents and going back to our roots. Like a photo from the past, this room exemplifies all that is charming about the perfect farmhouse; take a look below as we break down each element.

Rush Seat Chair in English PineWood Furniture

The drop leaf wood table beautifully takes center stage in this room, and is surrounded by simple slat-back chairs that have distressed surfaces and a well-loved appeal. They feature a similar finish, but could vary in design for a mismatched look brought together by the rustic, minimal aesthetic.

Large Armoire or Hutch

Also wood, this hutch could be used for storing linens, table settings and so much more, and its large stature fills the room with primitive appeal. This is a practical furniture piece because you can display items on top and have decorative storage space for many of your things in a dining room, bedroom, kitchen or hallway.

Period LightingBlack Onion Lantern

Did you notice the onion lantern and candlesticks near the hutch in the back of the room? These are perfect for creating the farmhouse look, in addition to bringing extra light to a room.

Entwined Florets Rug

Rustic Wall Art

Folk art designs and country landscapes complement the rustic contents of the room, especially if the wall art itself is crafted out of wood, features a warm patina or is a historical reproduction.

Other Accents

The wing-back chair was historically used to protect the sitter from drafts and to keep the heat from a fireplace around the seating area. They may serve the same purpose in some homes today, but this elegantly designed chair also adds notes of formality and decoration to any space. In the room above, a large pattern covers the upholstery, which enhances the beauty of the wooden legs and traditional appeal of the other furniture. Large area rugs also adorn the room in pattern and folk art color, protecting the beautiful hardwood floors and adding an extra element of comfort underfoot.

Weekly Spotlight: National Library Week

Wednesday, April 13th, 2016

This week marks the 58th National Library Week, a time to show additional support for libraries and the many resources available through libraries.

In celebration, this week we are offering a few tips on creating a library space within your home; whether you have a bare corner you don’t know what to do with or an empty room you would like to transform into a space dedicate to knowledge, reading and relaxation.

Library Furnishings

A Comfortable Chair

To ensure you won’t fall asleep or strain your back by slouching as you read a captivating novel, we recommend a high back rocking chair with a plush seat so you can comfortably sit back for extended periods of reading time. Our Madison Rocker features a wide seat that doesn’t constrain and a high slatted back that supports. The Mission design is a classic look, especially in a richly decorated library. For extra seating, display space or to reach high shelves, our Library Chair (available in two rustic finishes) is a fully functional seating option that fits right in with your books and study materials.

A Bookcase

Of course, you need furniture that both displays and stores your books and library inspired treasures. Depending on your space, our Shaker Low Bookcase can offer shelving and even tabletop space next to your country chair. Our Shaker Tall Bookcases can fit in smaller libraries with just as much decorative and displaying potential.

Convenient Lighting

While overhead lighting is important, in a library you want to set a comfortable mood with an accent lamp or table lamp. Our texturally appealing Celina Accent Lamp brightens up the reading nook in your library not just through its warm light but with the alluring color of the lamp itself; perfect for any season.

Primitive Iron Hare & Magnifying Glass SculpturePrimitive Accents

For complementing your oldest tomes and charming new ones, ideal primitive home accents are worldly and decorative; appealing and functional. Our Hourglass Timer is not just a functioning timepiece but offers a sleek look on any bookshelf, desk or end table. Another statuesque treasure is our Iron Hare & Magnifying Glass Sculpture; get closer to fine print and hold loose papers steady on any tabletop surface. The rabbit will keep you company while you explore worlds within the pages of your favorite books. We suppose it also wouldn’t be a true library without at least one set of bookends for adding a little flair on the shelves of your bookcases.
