New Shaker Furniture Designs at Sturbridge; made in the USA

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Simplicity, purity and utility have been the founding cornerstones of Shaker furniture, design and living for nearly as long as America has been a nation. In 1774, Ann Lee arrived in New York with nine followers of a religious sect known as the Wardleys. They settled near Albany, where they developed into a community completely dedicated to spiritual living. Because their rituals included shouting and trembling, the religion’s followers became known as Shakers; thought to have been derived through combining the words ‘Shaking’ and ‘Quakers.’ Over the next 106 years, the Shaker movement grew to include nineteen religious communities scattered from Maine to Ohio to Florida, with a following of around 6,000 members. This included the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine, founded in 1783 – the last active Shaker community, located just a few towns over from us at Sturbridge.

The Shakers sought to apply harmony and order to every aspect of life. As they put it, “Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live and as if you were to die tomorrow.” Simple, honest style and fine craftsmanship are the hallmarks of Shaker design. Here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, we have a large selection of furniture that features the clean, simple lines this style is known for. With all shaker furniture, it is important that the piece have a functional benefit as well. Style and practicality is what you’ll find with our existing customer favorite and new shaker products.

Pictured here to the left is our Shaker Desk. The desk’s tapered legs highlight the smooth table surface for work and computer use. A single front drawer easily pulls out to store important paperwork or crafting materials. Our Shaker Desk is great because with the choice of either a chestnut or golden oak stain, it will coordinate with all home decor styles. If you need more space, we have a Large Shaker Desk, which offers two drawers instead.

Another new Shaker option at SYW is our Shaker Side Cabinet, seen here to the left. This side cabinet is great because it doubles as both a storage cabinet and an accent or end table. Designed to fit into smaller spaces, a front cabinet door opens to a spacious interior, while a bottom shelf and top table surface offer additional display space. This distinctive piece is also available in the chestnut (shown) or golden oak stain.

All of the new product mentioned here is proudly made in the USA of American hardwood that complies with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative of Northeast forests. A five step finishing process protects the furniture from moisture or stains; ensuring its durability and longevity for years to come in your home.

~A New Color to Consider this Spring

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Spring is only a short month away and there are many opportunities to get your home decor feeling more refreshed and ready for the upcoming and warmer months ahead. If you’re searching for something other than the traditional flowers or pastels this season, consider a color that will brighten both your mood and the liveliness of your home. The Pantone Color Institute, well known for their inspiration in the fashion and design world, has announced their 2012 color of the year: Tangerine Tango. A color like this one may be a little surprising at first, but just wait and see how it can become a fun accent color in any living space. Tangerine Tango is a reddish orange, that instills a desire to recharge and move forward. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Whether you use this color to make a statement on a Tangerine Tango painted accent wall or choose more subtle accents like a Tangerine Tango toss pillow or dishware in the kitchen, this unexpected spring color is easily incorporated with the selection offered at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. A beautiful and one of our more recent additions to our rug collection, is our Montego Braided Rug, seen above. The vibrant colors and practicality of this indoor/outdoor rug are qualities that are sure to make you smile. The color option shown in this rug is appropriately named Tangerine and works for living rooms, foyers, or on a screened porch or patio would be nice too. Our Montego Braided Rug is proudly made here in the USA.

Perhaps you’re feeling the bright orange rug is a bit too bold for you? As mentioned, this color works very well through the use of smaller focal points as well. Our Bunny Penny Pillow pictured here to the left, is a great example of how this shade of orange can be achieved in a decorative pillow. Display on your favorite chair or a bench in your entryway. An exclusive for Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, Donna Atkins designs a friendly white hare surrounded by a border of orange, yellow and green wool fabric penny flowers. Our Bunny Penny Pillow is crafted of a 100% wool hook front and a black felt base. Though not exactly Tangerine Tango, the color family is similar enough to help you achieve this new spring theme.

Spice up any room with this fun and exotic shade for spring. Incorporate Tangerine Tango on a bedspread or throw in the bedroom, tabletop accessories in the kitchen and dining room or wall art in the family room. If you’re really loving this color, see how perhaps you could add to your personal wardrobe too; maybe a new Tangerine Tango scarf or cardigan this season? For more decorating ideas, there is always more at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop.

At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we are proud to announce that we are now carrying a quality selection of Hearth Storage Products, exclusively on our website. For many of us in the North East, it has been a cold winter as usual and that means more time spent by the fire. Though even if you live where it never snows, the fireplace may still be one of your favorite spaces because it represents a central area of the home; what some call the “heart” of the home. Fireplaces are typically seen in large central rooms or living rooms as they always have been since the very first, early American homes. The hearth or the wood stove was used as the main heating source of a home, as well as many times the main cooking sourcel. This integral part of the home, became the life blood of both survival and family togetherness; as the majority of time was spent here. Celebrate home, family, and start enjoying more time around the fire with Sturbridge Yankee Workshop.

When it comes to hearth organization, it’s important that the hearth remain inviting and not cluttered. Pictured above is our traditional Hearth Rack, which is the perfect size to keep firewood in one confined space. Simple in style, though displaying beautiful, hand forged ends. This rack will fit nicely right on your hearth space to eliminate any additional mess.  It could make the ideal housewarming or wedding gift too. Another style to choose from amongst our assortment of Hearth Racks is our Vertical Arch Rack. A unique bent steel design creates the distinctive side arches that take up only a compact square foot of hearth space and holds 2.5 cubic feet of firewood. The arches also act as handles to easily lift your rack for cleaning or rearranging. And if you’re really looking for a hearth upgrade, customers should consider our unique Sling Rack with Bar & 3 Piece Tool Set. The perfect all in one set for your fireplace needs, our Sling Rack Bar will tidy up the hearth space wherever that is in your home.
