Meet: Maine Artist Leslie Mansmann

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Introducing another artist with work featured here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, Leslie Mansmann.

Another fabulous skilled artist here in Maine, accomplished illustrator and fine art painter Leslie Mansmann. Leslie Ann Windstein Mansmann, as is her full name, has always had a love for watercolor paints. As a child though, her first artistic endeavors were in the back of her father’s new car on his white upholstered seats! She quickly was transitioned to paper and pencil; suggested by her mother. Growing up in Chester County, Pennsylvania, she fell in love with her surrounding nature. Her early inspirations came from the Wyeth family artists, particularly N.C. the illustrator and Andrew the painter. Leslie was trained at the Philadelphia College of Art with a focus in illustration. Soon after, she began freelancing throughout the city in various areas of advertising and illustrative work. She created work for the U.S. Equestrian Team, Fisher Price Toys and Dome Pharmaceuticals; just to name a few.

After a brief stint in North Carolina, Leslie and her family moved to a 22 acre farm in West Virginia. Here, she continued to embrace nature and wildlife in her work. She also started a new venture of helping to rehabilitate injured birds and raptors (more on this below). In 2000, they moved to North Yarmouth, ME, where interestingly she had spent her honeymoon 30 years earlier. Their new farm on Renaissance Springs, provided the motivation to illustrate three children’s books; including the popular title At One. On all of Leslie’s farms she has found a home for her horses and beloved Jack Russells. Over the years she has been commissioned for a range of educational publications, posters, printed publications, public television and other commercial work.

Pictured here to the left is Leslie’s Crow on Branch Print, featuring a realistic depiction of a black crow. A similar print carried here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop is our Crow on Stump Print. Both prints were inspired by the love Leslie gained for these birds, while helping many of them during her time  in West Virginia. Leslie originally created these paintings with the use of watercolor and one of her favorite mediums, egg tempura. Egg tempura consists of egg yolk, dry pigments and the addition of oils and water as needed. Egg tempura or egg tempera, works well because over time as the water evaporates, it creates a long lasting, quick drying, intense color and depth. The use of this type of paint dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. Both of these Sturbridge prints featured above are framed by black hard wood, under glass and made in the USA. Pair together for a charming tribute to this intelligent bird and as Leslie says, to capture “the essence and magnificence of birds.”

Leslie’s admiration for nature, wildlife and all animals in general is captured beautifully in our Fox Print, displayed here to the right. We see an accurate portrayal of a fox pausing to take an icy drink, while catching a glimpse of his reflection in the pond. Leslie uses her detailed watercolor techniques to illustrate this incredible species, creating a snapshot of a peaceful moment in the woods. Shown with a matted border and also framed by black hard wood, under glass; made in the USA. Leslie loves as she says, “the dramatic change in seasons,” which Maine serves as the perfect backdrop for. She also enjoys a good challenge and has even attempted a beautiful self portrait, of herself wearing a fun feathered hat. With the inspiring environment we live in, we are sure to see more of Leslie Mansmann’s fine art and illustrations in the near future.

“Nature provides the colors and beauty we all take for granted, and hopefully I will continue to capture its beauty and grandeur from all angles for many, many years to come.” - Leslie A. W. Mansmann

Framed Folk Art Prints

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Folk art is an American tradition, evolved from our earliest craftsmen and women of colonial times. In the most basic sense, Folk Art reflects the conventional values of a society; thus why we see a change in subject matter or style over time. The art form encompasses a variety of techniques; such as: watercolor, oil or acrylic paintings, wool hooked rugs, painted or carved furniture and whimsical sculptures. All of these and more have become part of the American rustic style of design known as folk art.

Here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, we celebrate and honor the incredible talent of our folk artists. Their beautiful renditions of American landscapes, historical figures and landmarks, whimsical portraits and familiar animals are very appealing and perfectly suited for your country home. You might also consider one of our framed prints for a great gift this holiday season for the art enthusiast or collector on your list! To give you a sample of the range of folk art we carry, take a look at some of our wall art below.

Americana

A favored theme among many of our folk artists is Americana. A majority of Sturbridge prints feature the American flag at its finest, such as our Chair with Jug Print, seen here to the left. Originally painted by artist Cecile Baird, we see an antique ladderback chair with an old whiskey jug, an American flag, and a berry wreath. For more Americana inspired prints, click below and feel proud of the U.S.A. with artwork by Billy Jacobs and Phillip Philbeck.

Historical

Historical prints with a twist, is what you’ll find in our collection of historical figures and landmarks at Sturbridge. The whimsical characters and landscapes are created by none other than folk artist, Tim Campbell. His approach to George Washington allows us to see another side to our first president. The other historical figures, such as his wife Martha and Abe Lincoln, offer unexpected facial expressions.

It’s important to surround ourselves with things that inspire our hopes and our dreams. Our collection of inspirational themed folk art is something we’re proud of. Our Living Life Print, seen here to the left, is delightfully created by artist Bonnie Mohr. Featuring lessons to live by such as, “Life is not a race – but indeed a journey. Be Honest. Work Hard. Be Choosy. Say “thank you”, and “great job” to someone each day.” The others listed below also display messages of positive thoughts and sayings.

From dogs and cats to rabbits and crows, there is surely to be a furry creature that you’ll fall in love with. Pictured to the left, is our Green Rabbit Print, by artist Lisa Hilliker.

Lazily stretched out in a green meadow, this black and white bunny is inspired by the natural beauty found in Vermont; available with a red background too if you prefer. A simple black crow perched on a branch, by Maine artist Leslie Mansmann or our modern, abstract boxer by artist John Golden, will find comfort on your walls and add to your home’s country charm.

Thanksgiving Decor at SYW

Friday, October 7th, 2011

The very first Thanksgiving, as we know it in our American history was in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 53 surviving pilgrims, after their first year in the new world, celebrated their first successful harvest; with help from the Native Americans who taught them how to grow crops on their land and how to properly catch fish. There wasn’t a true national holiday of Thanksgiving as recognized by all the states until 1863, when President Lincoln declared the ‘day of thanks’ to be held each year in November.

While only here one day of the year, Thanksgiving decor can be brought to life the day after Halloween. Turkeys, pumpkins and amazing fall leaves are what we look for, but sometimes what we really want can be difficult to find. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we have collected a handful of our harvest themed items that we know will coordinate well in your country home. From the simplest of accents to gorgeous framed prints, Thanksgiving is going to look great this year.

Simple Accents

It’s the simple things that can add to your holiday decor. With these items it makes harvest decorating easy! Let’s start with our Autumn Wreath. A smart choice for adding festive flare to any wall or door, this wreath includes Indian corn, quince slices, dried wheat, maple leaves, natural wheat, flax, millet yarrow, and safflower all on a twig base.

If your looking for a quick and simple fix to your tablescape, consider these two items. Our Wheat Candle Holders, showing off a tall bundle of wheat, are tied in a bow and finished with an antique bronze finish; these candle holders feel vintage and sophisticated. Pictured here to the left, is our Turkey Wagon Centerpiece, featuring primitive colors of red, green and brown. The hollowed out pumpkin can be used to hold your favorite wrapped candies or nuts.

Inspiring Signs

Our nostalgic, pine wood signs will be a breath of fresh air this harvest season. A rust background with a crackled finish gives our Bountiful Sign a vintage feel and the mustard yellow frame completes the look. The next pine wood signs are handcrafted in the USA and offer a colonial inspired look. Our Friends Gather Here Sign, displays rich black, hand painted lettering atop a distressed mustard background. Though the message is symbolic for Thanksgiving, it’s perfect to hang year round. Our Happy Thanksgiving Sign is short and sweet. Evoking quality cursive writing against a burnt orange base, this sign is a great way to greet your guests for the big dinner.

Framed Prints

We know you love the many exquisitely painted framed prints by our well known artists. Here we offer three autumn themed prints that will become the focal point of any room.

Our Autumn Gold’s Print, pictured here to the right, is a watercolor print by artist John Stevens. A solemn late fall afternoon of leaves blowing in the wind and a pumpkin display, is bordered by a frame made to appear as distressed walnut. Next is our Autumn Solitude Print, by artist Doug Henry. A historic New England barn with rich foliage in the distance, takes center stage while one lone cow stands watch. Another print by Doug Henry features a classic New England church nestled among lovely old farmhouses at the base of a hill. Our Autumn Waits River Print has a textured finish to highlight the breathtaking fall leaves. All of our framed prints listed here are made in the USA.
