Create a Storm Essentials Kit

The power can go out during a storm without warning. Be prepared for a power outage and loss of electricity all year long with storm essentials. Aside from the all-important items to keep in stock such as canned food or fresh water, do not forget the small things like batteries and candles. Featured here are a few of our suggestions for preparing items for all weather conditions. Although we are no experts, we hope that these ideas will help you prepare for a potential power outage.
Whatever the Weather

When a storm hits, you want to be as prepared as possible – and this includes planning for a power outage. Keeping “emergency” matches and mini candles in one place will keep you from stumbling in the dark and worrying about what necessities you do or do not have. With a box like our Candle Box, you can store candles, as well as matches and batteries inside for easy access during a storm. Keep the box in a cabinet for storm-only use, and always replenish the supplies you used so as to be prepared for the next time the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Candle Box Basic Items to Keep in Your Kit

1. Batteries. Stock up on all sizes for those flashlights that have accumulated in the garage over the years.

2. First Aid Supplies. A few bandages and wound ointment can go a long way.

3. Can Opener. Because we all know that it is difficult open a can without one.

4. Light Source. Candles, with a flame or battery operated, are important pieces to keep in stock. Use jars to hold your candles if flames are a worry.

Battery Powered Flameless Candles

To avoid any worry when using flame candles in your home, use battery powered candles instead. Here at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we have many candle options available to you, and have gathered just a few of our flameless favorites. Pillar candles and votives have a decorative appeal, but their white, opaque color helps the light warmly illuminate your home. If you are using real candles, do not forget a Candle Snuffer to quickly and efficiently extinguish the flames when you are not in the room.
