Vendor Spotlight: Lucuma Designs, Handmade in Peru

Pictured here to the left, our Cat and Owl Gourd Ornaments are new at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop for holiday 2012. These petite gourds are hand carved from natural gourds, and are designed as either a black cat or orange toned owl. The Cat Gourd Ornament is painted black with a pink nose and fine ‘fur’ details. The Owl Gourd Ornament is presented in gold and orange coloring, with large orange eyes, spots, and a raised black beak. Our gourd ornaments offer a native inspired and old world look to your tree for the holiday season, or year round in a window. Both are indeed handcrafted, and thus details will vary as the artist intended, based on the shape and size of the gourd. Available now for just $14.95 each, they also will SHIP FREE to our customers.

Lucuma Designs

Each of the Gourd Ornaments is handmade in the country of Peru through a fair trade company named Lucuma Designs. This style of Peruvian folk art is one that dates back over 4000 years, as a traditional craft of the people of Peru. Gourds in Peru were originally used to store food or spices, or even drink out of. They were also a means for trading between villages. Today, master carvers of the Andean region of Peru, travel to gourd fields to find the best quality gourds. After peeling the outer green skin of the gourd and leaving to dry naturally in the hot sun, the creative process can begin. Skilled artists first sketch the pattern onto each gourd. Next the design is hand carved with hand chisels and high attention to accuracy. Gorgeous shades of black and brown that are exhibited on our Cat and Owl Gourd Ornaments, are achieved through a technique called pyrograpy; essentially  burning areas of the design to add texture and enrich the “natural” appearance. The craft of carving gourds brings with it a history and cultural significance, often times telling a story that has been passed down for generations.

Feel good about your purchase of a Gourd Ornament from Sturbridge Yankee Workshop this season; you’ll be helping to support the communities of woman entrepreneurs and families working together to make these beautiful works of art. You might consider either one or both of these ornaments as a thoughtful idea for a friend or hostess gift. Everyone will surely be happy to receive such a well crafted, fair trade product.
