You may have become very familiar with the work of talented folk artist Lisa Hilliker over the years at Sturbridge Yankee Workshop. Her style is loved by many around the USA, especially within the folk art community. Let’s learn a little bit more about today’s featured artist: Lisa Hilliker.
Growing up and living in rural Vermont for most of her life, Lisa has learned to appreciate all the natural beauty and abundant wildlife this great New England state has to offer. Those of you who are fans of her work can clearly see where her inspiration draws from. Lisa began creating art as a child and was influenced by two maternal figures. Both her mother and grandmother were very artistic, becoming Lisa’s earliest teachers/mentors; her grandmother was an 8th grade art teacher. Lisa was determined to accomplish her goals at an early age and actually sold her first piece of art at age 14. The simplicity of North East Vermont is beautifully depicted in our Green Rabbit Print, shown here to the left. Lazily stretched out in a green meadow, this black and white rabbit will add country grace to your walls and is perfect to display any time of year. Framed in black, you might also enjoy this rabbits companion, our Red Rabbit Print. Featuring the same painted image in reverse, with a contrasting red background. The Rabbit Prints, by this artist are available at only $49.95 during our made in the USA sale this summer.
For a piece of framed art that is more whimsical in nature, consider our Penny Cat Print, pictured here to the left. Originally painted by none other than Lisa Hilliker, this print is available in your choice of a gray cat (shown) or a bright orange tabby cat. The golden background provides a nice contrast to the black and white check border that frames the image. The large cat enjoys a day by the cheerful red, orange and blue penny flowers in the foreground. We are happy to share that the Penny Cat Print, also proudly made here in the USA, is on sale now for $79.95 this summer.
Lisa Hilliker works primarily with acrylics and finishes her paintings with an antiquing process; which provides a protective varnish as well. Today she continues to live and work in Vermont and likes to keep things simple. One way she does that is with her favorite cat, her muse, always by her side. It is said that all of her animals have proved good models over the years. Perhaps the gray kitty pictured above is drawn from Lisa’s real life? Enjoying the company of her husband, Brent, who now works full time with Lisa in her studio; they have two children together, Nate and Emma.
It should also be noted that fellow Vermonter and well known, accomplished artist Warren Kimble is a source of inspiration and motivation for Lisa too. They share a love for using barn board and painting on old antique wood slabs. First sanding, followed by applying a base coat, makes a great medium on which to paint on; especially rural landscapes, folk art characters and old-fashioned country themes.
Thank you Lisa for providing us with amazing folk art to share with our customers. Your art and life accomplishments thus far are impressive and we wish you all the best. For more items at SYW showcasing the work of Lisa Hilliker, click here.
