~Summer Glass; Beautiful Stained Glass made in the USA

Mystic, Connecticut is clearly a place for imaginative inspiration. Home to the largest maritime museum and the Mystic Aquarium, this coastal region between New York and Boston, originated in 1651 as primarily a seaport where locals made their living in the shipbuilding business. From the same New England town, sometimes referred to as “Mystic Country,” came the birthplace of another great business: Summer Glass.

Rebecca Bertiaume, had always wanted to turn her hobby of creating stained glass art into a dream. In 1993 she began producing original designs by combining textured glass and vibrant colors to make what she calls “bright and fun.” The original owner of the well known frozen pizza along the east coast, Mystic Pizza, decided it was time for a bigger change when she sold the company in 2001. In 2003 Summer Glass moved to a renovated studio near the Mystic River in an over 100 year old building. Rebecca’s art at Summer Glass covers a wide spectrum of themes; including of course objects from the sand and sea. At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we are happy to carry a selection of Summer Glass products.

Featured here to the left is our beautiful Stained Glass Flower. Place this red daisy in the sunlight and watch how the sun dances off the surface. The flower is a handcrafted original with bright red glass petals, a sunshine yellow center and a carefully formed trim. We also offer a few other pretty glass designs; including our Stained Glass Double Heart and Large Stained Glass Heart. All of these beautiful decoratives are proudly made in the USA.

The art and technique of stained glass is over 1000 years old. You may be familiar with stained glass windows, which we see a height in popularity during the middle ages of western European churches; many of which are still in tact today. However, historians date the very first glass creations back to ancient Egypt and later note glazing methods used by the Romans. There are many ways to form artistic glass sculptures, such as the ones mentioned here, but the basis for how to generate the color in the glass remains the same. Metallic oxides added to the glass when it’s in its molten state, is how the deep hues are formed. Cobalt oxides make blue, Copper makes green and Gold or Copper can produce a red color. Once cool enough, the mixture is flexible enough to bend and shape. It can be blown using a cylinder glass or hand blown using a crown glass. The next steps will vary depending on the appearance desired, but typically the molten glass is spun or rolled out flat.

  1. Stained Glass is a very special type of material. No wonder it has such a magnetic and powerful effect when we experience it, be that in a dramatic cathedral or in a domestic setting. It is the effect of light shining through the transparent glass that is the source of stained glass’s visual power. It’s not surprising that the process of making this glass was shrouded in such secrecy in the past.
