A Woodland Inspired Christmas

Avian Accents

Have you ever thought of having a Woodland themed Christmas? At Sturbridge Yankee Workshop we have done all the hard work for you and gathered some of our best woodsy items to help you decorate for the holidays this year. A great way to start, is to think about how to bring elements from the outdoors in. Birds often stand out this time of year because of their contrasting colors to the season outdoors. Consider avian accents throughout your home to make the woodland theme come to life. Our Wooden Clip Cardinals, as seen here to the left, are carved from wood and have hand painted details. Coming as a set of two bird clips, you can easily decorate your tree, lampshade, curtain or windowsill.

If you like, we also offer Wooden Clip Songbirds, which come in a pretty blue. New for the holiday season, we have our Felt Bird Ornaments, pictured below. Hand stitched details are exposed atop these black, red and white Christmas doves. Each of their wings has a felt appliquéd holly berry arrangement with sewn in red glass beads. A yellow beak and black bead eyes are the little things we appreciate this time of year; set of 3. Collect all of our bird sets for a dramatic ornament arrangement on your tree.

Do It Yourself Woodland Ideas

1. Collect pinecones and twigs from outside, rinse and let dry. Find a white spray paint to mist or completely cover (your choice) these natural elements. Let dry. Add adhesive glitter if you want that extra sparkle and arrange within your Christmas Tree or along your mantle above the fireplace.

2. If you’re lucky enough to have some birch wood near by, consider making this rustic idea. Find a 2″ in diameter birch tree branch and cut size(s) as you desire (make sure to have a flat even surface). Next, drill a just deep enough hole for the height of your candle in the top center, measure with candle and adjust as needed. Coat the birch candle holder with polyurethane spray and enjoy! –> Tea lights with protective metal or wrapping work best.

3. Before we get more snow, collect the dozens of acorns you most likely have scattered across your lawn. Rinse off and let dry. Mix with your favorite scented dried potpourri and display in a glass vase for a woodland inspired centerpiece.

In the Woods

Pinecones, pinecones and more pinecones! At Sturbridge we have many products that display a woodland inspired theme, many of which include pinecones. First though we picture our Christmas Pinecone here to the left. Our Christmas Pinecone is made right here in New England and offers natural beauty to your home. The added faux greens, berries and sheer red bow are the final touches. Designed by Wendi Smith, this pinecone looks great by itself on a doorknob, cupboard or your tree, but arrange with multiple for a bold woodland feel.

Our Pinecone Lace Curtains will add a lakeside cabin feel to your kitchen or bathroom. Clusters of pinecones accent these pretty lacy curtains, made of easy-care polyester with the look and feel of heavyweight cotton. Or, try our Pinecone Thermometer Clock, to carry the theme over to the outside of your house. Offering time and temperature in one versatile design, the deep rich bronze background and copper-colored numbers make it easy to read. Made from durable, rust-free, recycled aluminum, in the USA.

Woodland Critters

Did you know that Maine’s moose population is estimated at over 30,000? Bring the Maine woods into your home with our Maine Wool Moose Ornament w/ Lights, as seen to the right; he could be the star of your woodland themed tree this year. Made of recycled wool, this eco-friendly ornament is adorned with green, yellow, blue and red lights on his antlers and a red and green “Maine” scarf. This friendly moose also has adjustable legs to really get him moving!

Hoot Hoot! Our Small Owl Figurine is petite in size and features fierce golden eyes. It has the look of wood that was carefully carved and painted years ago, but will be a treasured decorative accent for years to come. Adding a bit of old fashioned charm, this owl will look great on your mantle or side table and coordinate perfectly with your woodland theme.
